The US supreme court will hear oral arguments next week to decide whether companies can patent human genes, in a landmark case which could alter the course of US medical research and the battle against diseases such as breast and ovarian cancer.

US supreme court to decide if companies can patent human genes

A coalition of scientists, cancer survivors, patients, breast cancer groups and professional medical associations, which has brought the case, will argue that genes are "products of nature", like organs of the body and should not be exploited for commercial gain. Such patents are illegal and violate the first amendment, they say. They are challenging patents on two genes linked to breast and ovarian cancer owned by Myriad Genetics, a biotechnology company, because they say the patents have stymied research and the free exchange of ideas. Find More Stories Coalition's NBN pitch rests on a doubtful cost projection Renai LeMay If the Coalition was accurate in its claim that Labor's existing NBN will cost $94 billion, the case for pursuing Malcolm Turnbull's own $29.5 billion alternative would look a lot more attractive.

Coalition's NBN plan 'not ideal' but prudent: Turnbull

Delimiter – The Coalition’s NBN policy is a triumph of short-termism over long-term vision. “The superfast broadband of the order of 100+ megabits per second (Mbps) and into the gigaspeed bracket is de rigueur for any nation purporting to be a developed and advancing economy.” – Phil Ruthven, “A Snapshot of Australia’s Digital Economy to 2050”, IbisWorld, June 2012.

Delimiter – The Coalition’s NBN policy is a triumph of short-termism over long-term vision

The Coalition should firstly be congratulated upon launching today a detailed, closely argued policy proposal on their alternative vision for the National Broadband Network and how it can be implemented “faster” and at less cost than the current NBN. Malcolm Turnbull has moved the Coalition light years – or at least several million fibre optic kilometres – from the Luddite criticisms thrown up by the Opposition during the 2010 federal election campaign. And today, with his party leader Tony Abbott, he has released a coherent policy five months in advance of the 2013 election, in contrast to the Opposition’s broadband policy release just three days ahead of the previous federal election, on 13 August 2010. Across Europe, political leaders have lost the trust of their people.

There was a time when to live a life virtuously was well understood. It embraced personal integrity, commitment to a purpose that was higher than personal gain, a degree of selflessness and even modesty. NBN numbers game begins. Communications Minister Stephen Conroy’s approach with Telstra was to go hard, but the Opposition’s Malcolm Turnbull will be hoping his superior sales skills come to the fore.
