Noun Clauses
“Parts of speech” are the basic types of words that English has.
In English, it is common to use more than one adjective before a noun — for example, “He's a silly young fool,” or “She's a smart, energetic woman.”
A sentence which contains one independent clause and one or more dependent clauses is called a complex sentence .
Traditional grammar classifies words based on eight parts of speech : the verb , the noun , the pronoun , the adjective , the adverb , the preposition , the conjunction , and the interjection . Each part of speech explains not what the word is , but how the word is used . In fact, the same word can be a noun in one sentence and a verb or adjective in the next.
At the minimum, a prepositional phrase will begin with a preposition and end with a noun , pronoun , gerund , or clause , the "object" of the preposition. A prepositional phrase will function as an adjective or adverb . As an adjective, the prepositional phrase will answer the question Which one?
Learning about the parts of speech is the first step in grammar study just as learning the letters of the alphabet is the first step to being able to read and write.
