FossilFuelFreeInvestBrief2016. Resources - Individual. Demand a Fossil Free Retirement. Petition content reads: For most Americans, retirement planning means taking advantage of a 401k/403(b) or similar plan offered by their employer.
In fact, American workers have invested more than $4.4 trillion in 401(k)s and similar retirement plans already. But scientists also tell us that to stop the worst impacts of climate change, we need to leave 80% of known fossil fuel reserves in the ground and make a rapid transition to 100% clean energy by 2050. That means a share of a big oil company with a 20 year plan to drill in the arctic, or utilities betting on China building a new generation of coal plants are both bad ideas and bad investments.
New York lost billions with fossil fuel investments. Investing in fossil fuels is becoming a liability — not only for the planet, but for the portfolio, too.
The industry garnered a staggering $5 billion loss for the New York State Common Retirement Fund (NYS-CRF) over three years, according to an analyst estimate from the investment research firm Corporate Knights. The state’s $189.4 billion pension fund, the third largest in the country, covers 1.1 million members across the state. The loss equates to $4,500 per person. In order to measure what sort of impact fossil fuel holdings was having on the New York State Common Retirement Fund’s equity portfolio, Corporate Knights took the 100 biggest companies that the fund has shares in. Of those, the biggest fossil fuel companies, including coal utilities, were removed.
Fossil fuels are terrible investments, says top energy economist. A lot of things are better when tapped at the source.
Spring water. Maple syrup. How much does the world spend to subsidize fossil fuels? The IMF wants to know. The folks at the IMF – yes, that great Satan of the ’90s – just released a working paper on how much we all pay to subsidize fossil fuels like oil, gas, and coal.
Seriously. All the humans currently on this planet. They tallied up what we pay to help energy companies get fossil fuels out of the ground. Fossil fuels subsidised by $10m a minute, says IMF. Fossil fuel companies are benefitting from global subsidies of $5.3tn (£3.4tn) a year, equivalent to $10m a minute every day, according to a startling new estimate by the International Monetary Fund.
The IMF calls the revelation “shocking” and says the figure is an “extremely robust” estimate of the true cost of fossil fuels. The $5.3tn subsidy estimated for 2015 is greater than the total health spending of all the world’s governments. The vast sum is largely due to polluters not paying the costs imposed on governments by the burning of coal, oil and gas. Global Divestment Day 2015.
8 ways Obama sucks on climate. The new conventional wisdom among the political class is that President Obama is doing everything he can without the cooperation of Congress to fight climate change.
His administration set higher fuel-economy standards for cars and trucks. It has proposed the first-ever regulations on carbon emissions from power plants, and on methane leakage from oil and gas wells and pipelines. He got China on board with a plan to limit emissions, potentially paving the way for an international climate agreement later this year in Paris. Protests, oil prices add fuel to the divestment fire. Fossil fuel companies grow nervous as divestment movement grows stronger.
LIMA, Peru — Though fossil fuel companies may wave their hands dismissively at the divestment movement, some nervous actions of late show more concern than they let on. Consider this curious incident here in Lima, as the United Nations climate talks entered their second week. Shell’s chief climate change advisor was slated to present a panel, cosponsored by Chevron, entitled, “Why Divest from Fossil Fuels When a Future with Low-Emission Fossil Energy Use Is Already a Reality?”
Except … they didn’t. Late last week, the title was quietly changed to the more innocuous, “How Can We Reconcile Climate Targets with Energy Demand Growth?” It must have been done in a hurry because they forgot to change the web address for the event page. Fossil Free France – Journée Mondiale de Désinvestissment. Thanks to the fracking boom, we’re wasting more money than ever on fossil fuel subsidies.
You probably know that the U.S. government subsidizes fossil fuel production. But here’s something you probably don’t know: Those subsidies have recently increased dramatically. According to a report released last week by Oil Change International, “Federal fossil fuel production and exploration subsidies in the United States have risen by 45 percent since President Obama took office in 2009, from $12.7 billion to a current total of $18.5 billion.”
Tell World Leaders to End Fossil Fuel Subsidies! Activists hail success of Twitter storm against fossil fuel subsidies. Climate and anti-poverty activists have launched a 24-hour "Twitter storm" against the hundreds of billions of dollars of government subsidies paid each year to the petroleum and coal industry, despite the global economic downturn and the rise in emissions. The blitz, which has been supported by Stephen Fry, Robert Redford, actor Mark Ruffalo, politicians and environmentalists, took the hash tag #endfossilfuelsubsidies up to number two in the ranking of globally trending topics and number one in the US. "We're averaging a tweet a second, but it picks up when celebs hit the hashtag," said Jamie Henn of www.350.org, a climate group that is among the leaders of the campaign. The online demonstration came as negotiators at the Rio+20 sustainable development conference remained divided over proposals to phase out the provision of public funds to carbon dioxide polluters.
