(Photo by Kurtis Alexander) For the second time in two weeks, protesters angry with tech-boom gentrification in the Bay Area surrounded and temporarily blocked corporate shuttle buses full of tech workers — both in San Francisco and Oakland. This go-round, however, some activists apparently became destructive. A window was shattered and tires were slashed on a bus that was picking up Google employees at 7th and Adeline streets near the West Oakland BART Station, according to the Bay Area Council, which represents businesses that run shuttles. The damage was corroborated by photos on Twitter. Efforts to talk to the bus riders were unsuccessful.

One bus was vandalized. This was the second wave of protests this month targeting the buses. San Francisco is split between young tech workers and those who say they are being pushed out of a city they can no longer afford. Apple, Facebook, Google and other major Silicon Valley companies deploy shiny fleets of unmarked coaches equipped with air conditioning, plush seats and wireless Internet access to ease the commutes of their workers. The buses, which use public bus stops to pick up and drop off their passengers, have become a symbol of a growing and increasingly ugly class war here. More and more people believe that the vast wealth being amassed by the industry is not spilling over into the community. The Bay Area Council -- which represents Bay Area businesses, including shuttle operators -- said 30 companies operate the buses. Occupy Big Food.

300,000 Organic Farmers Sue Monsanto in Federal Court: Decision on March 31st to Go to Trial

Nelson, President of Farm Aid, has recently called for the national Occupy movement to declare an “Occupy the Food System” action. Nelson states, “Corporate control of our food system has led to the loss of millions of family farmers, destruction of our soil…” Hundreds of citizens, (even including NYC chefs in their white chef hats) joined Occupy the Food System groups, ie Food Democracy Now, gathered outside the Federal Courts in Manhattan on January 31st, to support organic family farmers in their landmark lawsuit against Big Agribusiness giant Monsanto.

(Organic Seed Growers & Trade Association v. Monsanto) Oral arguments were heard that day concerning the lawsuit by 83 plaintiffs representing over 300,000 organic farmers, organic seed growers, and organic seed businesses. “Crazy, crazy for feeling so…..” “Crazy, crazy for feeling so…… 99% . Occupy Big Food Marches 'Zucchini Park'

Saturday’s chilly, but sunny, weather proved much more conducive to the Occupy Big Food protest. The last was postponed due to crappy weather. A group of about 50 gathered at the big red cube opposite Zuccotti Park carrying signs with messages like “Lettuce beet the system” and “Zucchini Park.” The protest was organized in part by Erika Lade, a student of the Food Systems graduate program at NYU and most of the young people present (myself included) were also part of the Food Studies program.

That's starting to change. Turkeys are going Godiva. The same passion for eating that brought us gourmet food trucks and swelled ratings for TV cooking shows has boosted demand for top-drawer turkeys with fancy names and even fancier price tags — up to $150 for a prized Bourbon Red heritage variety.
