Janet Echelman

http://www.echelman.com/olympic_oval.html Description Water Sky Garden transforms the plaza surrounding the Richmond Olympic Oval, official venue for the 2010 Vancouver Olympic Winter Games speed-skating events, into a permanent art environment for the community. Echelman’s design engages the space all around the viewer – water, sky, and pedestrian pathways – to create an immersive whole using rock, wood, water, air bubble fountains, steel, netting, and light. Red-stained cedar boardwalks lead visitors through the artwork.

Dennis Oppenheim (1938), Artist

Following his earthworks (1967-69) and body-works came the installations (from 1972 onwards), using puppets as their main theme (the harrowing piece " Attempt to Raise Hell " at the Pompidou Center ). Later on, at the end of the seventies, Oppenheim produced what he calls his " machine pieces " which, by denying the object its sculptural status, are presented as complex constructions, systems open to both an aleatory and an enigmatic mode of functioning... There is an interesting progression from the early machine pieces which seemed infused with a confidence in rationality and in the possibility of grasping the structure of the mind to the late works which were designed to literally blow up and which seem to celebrate the triumph of irrationality and chaos. http://www.dennis-oppenheim.com/

Average Shoveler is an online game challenging the boundaries between painting, video game, photo and short movie (1). Watch it by playing the role of that guy in a pixel-style world: he’s the one who looks just like that old brothels habitué called Larry Laffer, main character of a famous Sierra adventure (2) whose traces go back to the 80s. But don’t be fooled by the resemblance: this one wears Indigo People outfits instead, and he’s not a lazy Latin lover in a hot summer night, but an average shoveler in a cold winter day, struggling to clean all the snow covering the streets around his apartment in the East Village, NYC. Follow him walking around, but don’t count on passers-by: they won’t help.
