British politics owes a lot to Scotland: some of our greatest political leaders. There were few greater than Gladstone - born in Liverpool but a Scottish MP. His feats of oratory were legendary. The aim is to make sure people understand their employment rights, as well as ensuring bosses know what their staff are entitled to. The review could help strengthen the employment status of up to one million British workers. Vince said: “Workers should not be finding out that they are not protected by law once they get to employment tribunal. “Businesses should feel more confident knowing what type of contracts to hire staff on. “As the economy recovers, it is right to give a silent minority of workers, who currently have fewer employment rights, the security enjoyed by a majority of employees. “The Liberal Democrats will ensure we will get a system that is fair, simple and transparent.” The news follows a recent review into zero hours contracts, which revealed some workers could be missing out on basic rights such as maternity leave or unfair dismissal.

Other proposals floated at the Eurosceptic party’s annual conference included a luxury goods tax, which could see extra tariffs on shoes costing more than £200, handbags more than £1,000 and cars more than £50,000, a move the party believes could raise money from the wealthiest. The party’s economic spokesman, Patrick O’Flynn, suggested a VAT rate of 25% on such luxury goods. The conference, which is taking place at the racecourse in Doncaster, home Ed Miliband’s safe seat, is pitching strongly for the blue-collar vote. De Blasio was speaking to the Guardian before addressing the Labour party’s annual conference. There he derided the “voodoo economics” of the Conservative party’s chancellor, George Osborne, and promised: “Ed Miliband [the Labour leader] will be a prime minister for Britons with second jobs, not just those with second homes.”

In his speech to the Labour Party conference in Manchester, the shadow Chancellor will risk a backlash from women voters by arguing that all sections of society will have to make sacrifices so Labour could clear the deficit by 2020. Under his controversial plan, child benefit would rise by only 1 per cent in the first two financial years if Labour wins power at next May’s general election – less than the retail price index, currently 2.4 per cent. The £400m saved would be used to help cut the deficit. Mr Balls will also announce that he would cut the salaries of all government ministers by 5 per cent from next May. Their pay would be frozen until the nation’s books are balanced, which Labour has pledged to do by 2020.

This would save about £300,000 immediately and more in future years.
