http://smarterware.org/7102/how-and-why-i-switched-to-a-standing-desk I spend about 45 to 50 hours a week working on my computer. Up until a week ago, I did that work sitting on my ever-expanding behind. Last Monday I adjusted my desk to standing height (pictured right). I spent the week working on my feet, and I'm never going back to a sitdown desk again. Here are some questions and answers about the change.

The muscle soreness I'm experiencing today after walking around Comic-Con all weekend made me realize: I've got to incorporate more standing and walking into my daily routine. Maybe a treadmill desk ? There are some expensive desks made to fit over a treadmill (sold separately), but someone on Hacker News modified an IKEA Jerker desk to do the job. Sadly IKEA stopped making them a few years ago and by doing so got rid of one of the best items they ever sold. Since they were not made any more I went on a Craigslist quest to buy up a bunch of Jerker desks. http://www.ikeahackers.net/2010/10/jerker-treadmill-desk.html

Anthro Corporation Ryan Krauter The GeekDesk, left, and the Elevate Adjusta workstation by Anthro both allow employees to stand while doing tasks. The desks also can be quickly lowered for the person who would rather sit. I know this because I’ve spent several weeks trying to find the perfect way to work at my computer without a chair. Ergodesktop's Kangeroo, an adjustable stand up desk.

After ten years of working on the computer, my butt is killing me. No really, I have horrible tailbone pain if I sit for more than 15 or 20 minutes. So while looking up solutions to my coccyx problem, I made the shocking discovery that sitting is dangerous! That's right geeks, it may send you into a fit of denial, but humans weren't designed to sit motionless for hours, days, and years at a time while staring at computer screens. So, after reading how the long term effects of sitting are quite devasting to our frail human bodies, I decided to do what any brave websurfer would do: take one small leap for a techno-man and stand in the place that I work. Now if you are starting out on this great standing adventure, the first thing you are going to have to do is adjust your workstation to suit.
