300 Years Ago, India’s Very First Bible Was Translated Into Tamil By A German Missionary - Homegrown. Over three hundred years ago on January 3, 1714, the first Indian Bible was translated by a German missionary to Tamil. As the first Biblical translation printed in an Indian language, needless to say it was something of a historic moment for Indian-Christian literature. Bartholomaus Ziengenbalg, who is said to be the first Protestant missionary to visit India, came to the country in 1706 with fellow countrymen, Heinrich Plutschau, upon request by the King of Denmark. Arriving in the Danish coastal town Trankebar (today known as Tharangambadi) in Tamil Nadu, neither Ziengenbalg nor Pluetshau got a very warm reception, Hindu natives and even fellow Europeans suspected their intentions, both for different reasons. The Hindus felt threatened by the incoming and possible imposition of Christianity and the Danish officials feared that new converts would stand to challenge the colonisers authority.

Since I launched this website, there is one complaint that I've gotten a lot, and that complaint is, "you don't review enough American comic books, all you seem interested in reviewing is manga.

" And you know what? This statement is absolutely true. It's true that I don't review that many American comics as I could be reviewing, and it's true that I do have more of an interest in reviewing manga, but honestly, can you blame me? I mean, compared to American comics (where the market is made up of a good 90% of nothing but superhero and action series) manga is much more diverse, interesting, there are many more different genres in manga to work with than in American comics... in fact, there's just more manga out there PERIOD! I mean, there is only so many times I can review Spider-Man and Batman books and still have something interesting to say about them.

Basically, I prefer to review manga because in general, manga IS more interesting to read and review! Category:British criminals. 221B Baker Street: Sherlock Holmes. Yakuza (ヤクザ? , [jaꜜkuza]), also known as gokudō (極道?) , are members of transnational organized crime syndicates originating in Japan. The Japanese police, and media by request of the police, call them bōryokudan (暴力団? , "violence group"), while the yakuza call themselves "ninkyō dantai" (任侠団体 or 仁侠団体? , "chivalrous organizations"). The yakuza are notorious for their strict codes of conduct and very organized nature. Divisions of origin[edit] Despite uncertainty about the single origin of yakuza organizations, most modern yakuza derive from two classifications which emerged in the mid-Edo Period (1603–1868): tekiya, those who primarily peddled illicit, stolen or shoddy goods; and bakuto, those who were involved in or participated in gambling.[3] "Tekiya" (peddlers) were considered one of the lowest social groups in Edo.

Throughout history, especially since the modern era, Kyushu island has been the largest source of yakuza members, including many renowned bosses in the Yamaguchi-gumi. The Russian tanks rolled into Prague in August 1968, and the country was cowed into toeing Moscow's political line.

Funnily enough, the definitive end to the Prague Spring didn't happen until almost a year later with an ice hockey match some 650 miles away in Stockholm. It was the first major international sporting event between Czechoslovakia and the USSR since the invasion, and the Czechs splurged their hoarded foreign currency allowances to be able to attend and hold up signs such as "Your tanks won't help you now. " The Czechoslovak players, meanwhile, covered up the red stars on their jerseys. If such provocations weren't enough, Czechoslovakia won the game 2-0, and a massive celebratory riot broke out in Prague during which the offices of Aeroflot, the Russian state airline, were trashed. Otakar Vávra's Witches' Hammer (Kladivo na carodejnice, 1969) is more allegorical, but it doesn't take too much to see through his portrayal of the 17th century. First, before I begin to bore you with the usual sort of things science fiction writers say in speeches, let me bring you official greetings from Disneyland. I consider myself a spokesperson for Disneyland because I live just a few miles from it — and, as if that were not enough, I once had the honour of being interviewed there by Paris TV. For several weeks after the interview, I was really ill and confined to bed. I think it was the whirling teacups that did it. Elizabeth Antebi, who was the producer of the film, wanted to have me whirling around in one of the giant teacups while discussing the rise of fascism with Norman Spinrad... an old friend of mine who writes excellent science fiction.

Science fiction writers, I am sorry to say, really do not know anything. It reminds me of a headline that appeared in a California newspaper just before I flew here. Well, I will tell you what interests me, what I consider important. But the problem is a real one, not a mere intellectual game. The Fall Of The House Of Usher - Jan Svankmajer 1981 part 1. “Really, when doing a comic book, I think of myself as a writer first, and the art as another arsenal in your toolbox of writing. “With Kabuki especially, I like that each volume (as well as each chapter within a volume) has a different atmosphere and feel to it. “Comics allow that. Kabuki started in 1994 as an Orwellian sci-fi comic, about a Japanese woman, Ukiko, who is also a costumed assassin fighting against the criminal syndicate she worked for. “I started with a lot of captions. In Mack’s Kabuki follow-up, collectively reprinted as Dreams, Ukiko is on death’s door, collapsed and bleeding on her mother’s tombstone. “I write a full script and, without realizing it, I’m fairly wordy.

Terry Gilliam. B. Terence Vance Gilliam b. November 22, 1940, Minneapolis, Minnesota, USA filmographybibliographyweb resources Federico Fellini’s 8½ (1963) opens with one of cinema’s seminal dream sequences: a man is liberated from his car and coasts inhumanly between lanes in a swell of immobile traffic, extends his arms and coasts into the sky. The man shares a tether with a figure beneath him, and is abruptly yanked into a sea below. In the very next shot he springs upright into the frame. Thematically this action is a durable metaphor in film, a staging of temporary freedom from vices and disturbances that bear numerous incarnations. A capsule description of Gilliam’s work obligates a variety: his films depict over three millennia of history, approach birth and death, youth and old age.

Terence Vance Gilliam was born in 1940 in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Comedy, inevitably, distinguishes each of Gilliam’s first films. Jabberwocky is similar to the first two Python films in this measure. Terry Gilliam | Dreams: The Wholly Family. Platonic Themes in Chris Marker’s La Jetée. Chris Marker’s 1962 short film La Jetée (1962) is probably best known today as the inspiration for Terry Gilliam’s 1995 film 12 Monkeys. Some also consider it an influence on other popular time-travel films such as the Terminator series. Most serious critics acknowledge that Marker’s film is vastly superior to any of its imitators in its brilliant use of still images and sparse narration to construct a story which is both compelling and haunting. Indeed, an enormous amount has been written about Marker’s body of work and about this film in particular. In the face of this critical outpouring, it may be thought that nothing new or interesting could possibly be said about the film.

In this brief essay, however, I wish to approach the film in a manner which I believe offers an interpretation not normally associated with it. La Jetée begins with the description of a memory. On the tenth day, images begin to ooze, like confessions. A peacetime morning. They walk. Endnotes. Yakuza: The Japanese Mafia: ThingsAsian. "The nail that sticks up must be hammered down" - Japanese proverb There's no room for individuality in traditional Japanese society. In a country where uniformity is valued above all else, you have to keep the rules - or keep out. An inability to conform, to fall in with the customs and mores of the times, thus, has spawned sub-societies of `outsiders' at every turn of Japanese history. While some have expressed their differences in harmless ways, the frustrations of others have come out as violent rebellion.

The Yakuza - with 300 years of violence to their credit - is the oldest and most frightening of them all. Between 1958 and 1963, the number of Yakuza members rose to 184,000, more than the Japanese army, with over 5,000 separate gangs staking their claim over large pockets of the country. The figure plummeted to half in later years, but with bloody gang wars and new areas of illegal operations, the Yakuza is as much a blight to modern society as it was in its high-expansion years. E316K -- Bremen. I think that if there is any value in hearing writers talk, it will be in hearing what they can witness to and not what they can theorize about.

My own approach to literary problems is very like the one Dr. Johnson's blind housekeeper used when she poured tea–she put her finger inside the cup. These are not times when writers in this country can very well speak for one another. In the twenties there were those at Vanderbilt University who felt enough kinship with each other's ideas to issue a pamphlet called, I'll Take My Stand, and in the thirties there were writers whose social consciousness set them all going in more or less the same direction; but today there are no good writers, bound even loosely together, who would be so bold as to say that they speak for a generation or for each other.

Today each writer speaks for himself, even though he may not be sure that his work is important enough to justify his doing so. And his need, of course, is to be lifted up.
