Back to WRITINGS Parametricism - A New Global Style for Architecture and Urban Design Patrik Schumacher, London 2008 Published in: AD Architectural Design - Digital Cities, Vol 79, No 4, July/August 2009, guest editor: Neil Leach, general editor: Helen Castle Abstract: Though parametricism has its roots in the digital animation techniques of the mid-1990s, it has only fully emerged in recent years with the development of advanced parametric design systems.

Parametricism - A New Global Style for Architecture and Urban Design

Parametricism has become the dominant, single style for avant-garde practice today. It is particularly suited to large-scale urbanism as exemplified by a series of competition-winning master-plans by Zaha Hadid Architects. There is a global convergence in recent avant-garde architecture that justifies the enunciation of a new style: Parametricism. Design pattern (computer science) There are many types of design patterns, for instance Algorithm strategy patterns addressing concerns related to high-level strategies describing how to exploit application characteristics on a computing platform.Computational design patterns addressing concerns related to key computation identification.Execution patterns that address concerns related to supporting application execution, including strategies in executing streams of tasks and building blocks to support task synchronization.Implementation strategy patterns addressing concerns related to implementing source code to support program organization, andthe common data structures specific to parallel programming.Structural design patterns addressing concerns related to high-level structures of applications being developed.

History[edit] Although design patterns have been applied practically for a long time, formalization of the concept of design patterns languished for several years.[5] Practice[edit] Structure[edit] Criticism[edit] Digital Project Designer. Modeling Digital Cities for Smart Urban Growth

Enabling decision makers with well-informed data is essential to getting different city departments to cooperate on complex issues like energy management, transportation, storm water processing, and economic development. Ultimately, informed decisions can lead to better outcomes for the city-- it can mean a better standard of living, healthier environment, reduced pollution, and better infrastructure. Autodesk, the maker of digital software for engineers and architects, recently announced that Vancouver will be the 3rd pilot city in a program to create working 3D models of urban centers. The Digital Cities initiative integrates GIS mapping, building information modeling (BIM), civil engineering, and utility data into one 3D model that can be used to simulate the city-wide effects of planning proposals and infrastructure improvements.

After years of witnessing disjointed planning efforts, Obama seems to understand the bigger picture. Mapping the digital city. Contemporary urban space is no longer mobilised by a utopian, ultra-rational, standardising modernist inprint; nor is it fully defined operationally by physical infrastructure alone.

Mapping the digital city

Increasingly subject to personalised experiences and characterised invisibly by dynamic processes and human flows, it is a sentient city, whose pervasive digital and other environmental properties have an "alive" quality that can be monitored to help organise our lives. That is the thesis behind "Habitar", an exhibition at LABoral, the international centre for art, science and new technologies in Gijón, curated by José Luis de Vicente. While "Post-it City", the exhibition CCCB in Barcelona staged in 2008, focused on the emergence of hacking public space for individual community benefit, the new practices – halfway between geography and anthropology – are another, more liminal form of interpretation of urban space.

The exhibition presents the challenges of translating projects for public viewing.
