On the Maya number system

Numbers was the synchronicity that connected the inner world to the outer. Whereas to us in the West number is an abstract object to be manipulated within the mind, to the Mayans each number was the representation of a particular deity. Numbers are the wheel that is constantly rotating--the wheel that connects to the cyclic movements of time, birth, death, and renewal. In this sense Mayan number is closer to what mathematicians call algebra than to arithmetic because algebras are about the way things transform into each other, and Indigenous number is about the transformation of forms within the manifest world and about the flux of alliances and relationships between that underlying world of spirits and energies.

The Mayan Number System. Leaving aside for a moment its sacred aspect, the Mayan number system is vastly superior to the system devised by the Romans. Writing Numbers. Mayan Numbers" Along with their calendars -- the Tzolk'in, the Haab and the Long Count -- the Mayans also created their own math system.

Mayan Numbers"

They used a series of dots and bars to signify numbers. One dot equaled one unit, while one bar equaled five units. A shell symbol signified zero. In a system similar to the one we use now, the Mayans used place values to designate large numbers. However, the similarities between math systems end there. Mayans' place values are vertical, whereas ours are horizontal. Numbers held great significance in the Mayan culture. Difficulties with Division. A lot of teachers struggle with teaching division to children and I have been thinking about this recently.

Difficulties with Division

I think there are a number of factors contributing to this. Firstly, by the middle of Stage 2 there is a huge range of level of understanding of the concept of division and secondly the concept itself can be thought of as building on children's understandings of addition, subtraction and multiplication. The spread of different levels of understanding is likely to make any class "mixed ability" for this topic. There are also difficulties with the written algorithm. Altogether, it is a complicated picture. Let us try to unravel this a little and find some interesting problems that might help us to help our pupils. Division is often introduced as "sharing" and this is certainly one of the simplest approaches. This was presented on the website as a Stage 1 problem with a "three star" level of difficulty. Three lots of four make twelve 4\times 3=12 Four lots of three make twelve.
