nfronting the Classics: Traditions, Adventures and Innovations by Mary Beard | Books

Barbara Graziosi on a renowned reviewer’s disciplinary skirmishes Confronting the Classics brings together 31 reviews and essays originally published as stand-alone pieces in The Times Literary Supplement , the London Review of Books and The New York Review of Books , dating back to 1990. Reviews have been an important part of Mary Beard’s career, both as a classical scholar and a public figure, and it is fitting that they are collected here as a testament to this aspect of her work. The collection offers short, thought-provoking pieces on a wide range of subjects, with an emphasis on ancient Rome (Greece is less well represented). Several essays demolish previous scholarship: Sir Arthur Evans and his team of architects, Beard observes, built up the Minoan ruins in Crete, with plenty of “embarrassing mistakes”, and fed “to the early-twentieth century exactly the image of primitive culture that it wanted”. http://www.timeshighereducation.co.uk/books/confronting-the-classics-traditions-adventures-and-innovations-by-mary-beard/2003634.article
Description This course will be hosted by the Wai-Te-Ata Press at the Victoria University of Wellington in New Zealand. The Wai-Te-Ata Press incorporates both, the pre-digital and digital communication worlds, including the digital transcription of ancient texts. It focuses on bringing the past to life through teaching the skills and historical contexts of letterpress printing. Through research and practice its scholars investigate how digital technologies shape historical thinking. That is why it is home to many collaborative projects in Digital Humanities, for example: The Digital Colenso; Reading in World War 1 as part of the New Zealand Reading Experience Database; The Printers’ Web; and ArXe.type.

Strabo's Geography

The Author, the Manuscripts As with most ancient authors, not that much is known of Strabo, and the Loeb edition's introductory material , by the translator Horace Leonard Jones, is about as good as one can get. The Loeb edition also provides a thorough bibliography, including a very summary discussion of the principal manuscripts of the Geography: that too will eventually find its way onsite, except for some few addenda made by the Loeb editors in the later reprintings and therefore still under copyright. Further good information, especially on editions and translations, may be found on Sarah Pothecary's site . The entire work is online in English translation. http://penelope.uchicago.edu/Thayer/E/Roman/Texts/Strabo/home.html

Classical E-Text: THE HOMERIC HYMNS 1 - 3

THE HOMERIC HYMNS are a collection of thirty-three Greek poems composed in the old Epic style. They range in length from 3 to 500 lines. The shortest of these are brief invocations which served as preludes to longer festival recitations of epic. The largest four are complete epic narrative poems in themselves. The dating and authorship of the Hymns is complex.
About the author Wendy Haslem is a lecturer in the Cinema Studies program at the University of Melbourne where she teaches courses in film history. She has contributed a range of articles to the Oxford Companion to Australian Film .
