Business & Technical Writing: Home

It quickly grew into the equivalent of a handbook for writers of expository prose of all kinds. As a long-time teacher of writing I find the greatest obstacle many people have with writing is trying to make it "right" the first time—their focus on correctness makes writing much more difficult than it needs to be. Consequently, in this set of materials, I have included a section on Writing Process. Take time to read through these pages—they provide some understanding of how writing ought to be done. My Favorite Books of 2016

When I was young, there were few options to learn on my own. My parents had a set of World Book Encyclopedias, which I read through in alphabetical order. But there were no online courses, video lectures, or podcasts to introduce me to new ideas and thinkers as we have today. Still, reading books is my favorite way to learn about a new topic. I’ve been reading about a book a week on average since I was a kid. Home - The McSweeney's Store. Ediciones digitales Ed, ediciones académicas de impacto internacional. SIG Writing. O'Reilly Open Books Project. O'Reilly has published a number of Open Books--books with various forms of "open" copyright--over the years.

O'Reilly Open Books Project

The reasons for "opening" copyright, as well as the specific license agreements under which they are opened, are as varied as our authors. Perhaps a book was outdated enough to be put out of print, yet some people still needed the information it covered. Or the author or subject of a book felt strongly that it should be published under a particular open copyright. Maybe the book was written collectively by a particular community, as in the case of our Community Press books. But there's more to making Open Books available online than simply adopting an open license or giving up rights granted under copyright law. We're happy to have partnered with two innovative nonprofits, Creative Commons and the Internet Archive, to solve the licensing and digitizing challenges involved in bringing Open Books to readers. Slightly nerve-wracking, more time-consuming than you expect, and each time, there are surprises, sometimes great, sometimes terrible. Always, you learn new things. Introducing Multimodal Composition in the Two-Y... Multimodality is mainstream: In their exploration of threshold concepts for composition, Naming What We Know, Linda Adler-Kassner and Elizabeth Wardle posit that “all writing is multimodal” and “all writing is performative.” Andrea Lunsford showcases innovative assignments in her “Multimodal Mondays” blog. Articles in Teaching English in the Two Year College have addressed visual rhetoric and multimodal composition.

In the Basic Writing e-Journal, authors Thomas Henry, Joshua Hilst, and Regina Clemens Fox make the case for incorporating multimodal composition in the basic writing classroom, calling instructors to “embrace multimodal forms of knowing and communication.” Despite this prominence within our discipline, for many two-year composition instructors, the term is not familiar. Hermann Hesse on the Three Types of Readers and Why the Most Transcendent Form of Reading Is Non-reading. Categories are how we navigate the world, for better or for worse — this impulse toward organization helps us (to borrow Umberto Eco’s wonderful phrase) make infinity comprehensible, but its perilous flipside is the seedbed of stereotypes.

Hermann Hesse (July 2, 1877–August 9, 1962) placed this paradoxical nature of categories at the heart of his taxonomy of the three types of readers — a sort of fluid hierarchy of reading modes, which he outlined in an altogether magnificent 1920 essay titled “On Reading Books.” It was later included in My Belief: Essays on Life and Art (public library) — the terrific Hesse anthology that gave us the beloved writer and Nobel laureate on why the book will never lose its magic.

A Novel Educational Digital Storytelling Tool Focusing on Students Misconceptions Panagiotis Psomosa, Maria Kordakib Year: This paper describes the design and implementation of a new educational digital storytelling tool for the design and creation of multimedia digital stories to support students in reflecting on and overcoming their learning difficulties.

In fact, this new digital story tool can assist students in creating digital stories using the ‘Educational W’ (Ed-W) story grammar (Kordaki, 2013). The digital storytelling tool enables the learner to design the storyline for every step of the Ed-W story grammar separately, and to combine the multimedia files he has uploaded to his digital library.
