If you like this post follow me on twitter Laughter is that involuntary response humans of all cultures share, and while we may think of it as a reaction to humor (the funnier we find something, the more we laugh at it, goes the common wisdom), devoid of any other qualification it is a complex (and virulently contagious) social phenomenon. In this post I study the science of social laughter, the history of epidemics of contagious laughter and I’ll detail how to get started creating your own outbreaks. A small observational study done by Robert Provine in 2000 showed that humor has little to do with laughter, rather it is our social setting that influences our giggles : Only 10% to 20% of the laughter episodes we witnessed followed anything joke-like. Even the most humorous of the 1,200 comments that preceded laughter weren’t necessarily howlers: “You don’t have to drink, just buy us drinks!”

Historically, bagels originate from Poland in the 17th century when Jewish families would bake them to conclude the sabbath since they cooked very quickly unlike other types of bread. In Paris, the traditional Jewish bagels are slightly knotted and a bit larger than the bagels you’re likely to find in shops and supermarkets, but you’re limited to poppy seed. For more options, there are American-inspired bagel shops that have opened throughout the city. David’s Delicatessen in the 11th at 29 rue Jean-Pierre Timbaud (though I cannot say he properly uses the word delicatessen) and Ari’s Bagels just a block from the Canal St. Martin are two I’ve tried.
Pearltrees , a company offering a novel interface for sharing and finding content, has raised 5 million euros ($6.7 million US) in new funding. The basic unit of the Pearltrees service is the pearl, which is basically a bookmark. Users can assemble these pearls into trees based around a topic. Meanwhile, Pearltrees is using that data to determine how different topics and bookmarks are related, and allows users to find new pearls (related to whatever topic they’re exploring) through its “related interests” button.

The data that people store in their locker can be as prosaic as birth dates, or as specific as a preference for spicy foods. People have been willing to give away their data while the companies make money. But there is some momentum for the idea that personal data could function as a kind of online currency, to be cashed in directly or exchanged for other items of value. A number of start-ups allow people to take control — and perhaps profit from — the digital trails that they leave on the Internet.

From Noah’s Tape unspools the inevitable, intimate product of a journey across physical and emotional borders. Alternately tender, corrosive and raw, Noah’s Tape spans and spills from one musical auteur’s odyssey across continents, culture and meaning. Fluently trilingual and of French-Thai descent, Jessica Chalisa Nay has been distilling affliction and bliss through the language of beats, boards and strings since age 16. http://noahstape.com/biography/

"Chocolate is a comfort food," says Dan Johnson, owner of Choco-Logo in Buffalo, New York, which has seen retail sales rise 30 percent since last year. The confectionery industry, as a whole, grew 3.7 percent during the 52-week period ending April 19, according to the National Confectioners Association, which is pretty good considering so many industries are flat or declining. Historically, experts say, candy is one of the most recession-resistant industries and many of today’s classic brands, including Snickers, Tootsie Pops, and 3 Musketeers, all launched during the darkest days of the Great Depression, between 1930 and 1932.
