E. 3826:1&2-1916, © Victoria and Albert Museum, London The V&A's collection of ukiyo-e is one of the largest and finest in the world, with over 25,000 prints, paintings, drawings and books. Ukiyo-e means 'Pictures of the Floating World'. Images of everyday Japan, mass-produced for popular consumption in the Edo period (1615-1868), they represent one of the highpoints of Japanese cultural achievement. Ukiyo-e prints from the collection are available for study in the V&A Prints and Drawings study room. The art of ukiyo-e is most frequently associated with colour woodblock prints, popular in Japan from their development in 1765 until the closing decades of the Meiji period (1868-1912).

Marc Elder est plus précis, citant Monet : " J'eus la bonne fortune de découvrir un lot d'estampes chez un marchand hollandais.
C'était à Amsterdam dans une boutique de porcelaine de Delft. " Monet marchandait sans succès un objet. "Soudain j'aperçois sur un rayon, en contrebas, un plat rempli d'images. Je m'approche : des estampes du Japon ! " Cette scène se passe en 1871, l'année où Monet visite pour la première fois la Hollande au retour de son exil à Londres pendant la guerre franco-prussienne. Choix et rejets Claude Monet ne cesse ensuite de compléter sa collection, qui compte 231 estampes à la fin de sa vie. La préférence de Monet va aux paysages, à la représentation des éléments. Il rejette en revanche les scènes érotiques, et ne s'intéresse guère aux portraits d'acteurs, si fréquents dans la xylographie nippone. Estampe japonaise. Thematic Essay. After Japanese ports reopened to trade with the West in 1853, a tidal wave of foreign imports flooded European shores. Parisians saw their first formal exhibition of Japanese arts and crafts when Japan took a pavilion at the World's Fair of 1867. It is said that James Whistler discovered Japanese prints in a Chinese tearoom near London Bridge and that Claude Monet first came upon them used as wrapping paper in a spice shop in Holland. Experimentation with a wide range of pictorial modes, and with printmaking techniques as well, coincided with the growing popularity of Japanese woodcuts during the 1890s.
