After studying at the California Institute of the Arts (CalArts), he worked as an animator at the Walt Disney Studios before breaking out on his own. Taking inspiration from popular culture, fairy tales and traditions of the gothic, Burton has reinvented Hollywood genre filmmaking as an expression of a personal vision. The exhibition brings together over 700 drawings, paintings, photographs, moving-image works, storyboards, puppets, concept artworks, maquettes, costumes, and cinematic ephemera, including art from a number of unrealized and little-known personal projects. Many of these objects come from the artist's own archive, as well as from studio archives and private collections of Burton's collaborators.
Today, Friday, was my final day for visiting Paris.
To cross one more thing off my bucket list before I leave, I met up with Laura once again and we went to queue (for 45mins in the cold and with only a Twix for company) for the Tim Burton Exhibition at the Cinémathèque Française. This museum is located in Bercy in the south-east of the city and is home to a large archive of films and film-related objects, as well as a cinema, a restaurant and an exhibition hall. The Exposition Tim Burton is running until August 2012 and is a celebration of the American film director’s artistic career. On display are literally thousands of his hand-drawn pictures of the characters from all of his films, books and animations – some of which have turned into the characters we recognise well today and some who have never made it to the big screen and have almost been long lost.

Un record absolu pour la Cinémathèque française qui entend fêter les derniers jours. Une nuit exceptionnelle sera organisée samedi prochain, avec des entrées ouvertes jusqu'à minuit et un tarif spécial pour les visiteurs déguisés qui se verront offrir un «cocktail Tim Burton», indiqué ce jeudi les organisateurs. Des nocturnes sont également aménagées jusqu'à 22 heures le jeudi et le vendredi, contre une fermeture à 20 heures les autres jours.
«Depuis l’installation à Bercy en 2005, aucune de nos expositions n’avait accueilli autant de monde», explique le directeur de la Cinémathèque Serge Toubiana, dans un communiqué. Après le MoMa de New York, l’exposition Tim Burton accueille depuis le 7 mars plus de 500 dessins, photos et maquettes du cinéaste, créateur de Charlie et la Chocolaterie, L’Etrange Noël de Monsieur Jack ou, plus récemment, Dark Shadows.
