Our society was formed in February 1994 to celebrate the achievements of Black pioneers in British Columbia and was later expanded to include creating greater awareness of the history of Black people in B.C.

Our goals include developing an interest in promoting, educating and learning about B.C. Black history; promoting diversity and inclusion throughout the community; bringing together diverse groups of people who have an interest in fulfilling these goals. The Society meets monthly at the James Bay New Horizons Community Centre, 234 Menzies Street, Victoria. Our intention is to hold a business meeting in one month, followed by an educational or social event the following month. We invite you to become a part our Society and join our community of friends.

James Douglas was born in Demerara, British Guiana, which is now Guyana, in 1803, the son of a Scottish merchant with commercial interests in sugar plantations, and a “free woman of colour.”

In the records of the Hudson’s Bay Company (HBC), he is referred to as “a Scotch West Indian.” One biographer suggests that his mother “was probably a mulatto servant on his father’s plantation.” At the age of 12, he was taken to Lanark, Scotland, for schooling. In 1819, at 16 years old, he was apprenticed to the North West Company, and became an employee of the Hudson’s Bay Company when the two great fur-trading companies merged in 1821. James Douglas worked with HBC for about 20 years, rising to the top. In the early 1840s the western boundary between Great Britain and the United States was in dispute. Chaque année, à l’occasion du Mois de l’histoire des Noirs, les Canadiens sont conviés à prendre part aux célébrations et aux activités qui soulignent le patrimoine des Canadiens noirs, ceux d’hier et d’aujourd’hui. Les Canadiens profitent de cette occasion pour célébrer les nombreuses réalisations et contributions des Canadiens noirs qui, tout au long de l’histoire, ont tant fait pour permettre au Canada de devenir le pays culturellement diversifié, plein de compassion et prospère dans lequel nous vivons aujourd’hui. Au cours du Mois de l’histoire des Noirs, les Canadiens peuvent s’informer sur le vécu des Canadiens noirs et sur le rôle vital qu’ils ont joué dans notre société.

Fiers de notre histoire En 2014, les Canadiens et le monde célébreront deux anniversaires importants : le 100e anniversaire du déclenchement de la Première Guerre mondiale et le 75e anniversaire du déclenchement de la Deuxième Guerre mondiale.
