Reporting from the EC-sponsored Youth on the Move seminar in Florence, Phil Baty underscores the commitment of the Times Higher Education World University Rankings to weighing all facets of universities’ performance The European Commission seems to be labouring under a pretty basic misunderstanding about world university rankings. In its 2010 “Communication on Youth on the Move”, the commission recognised the importance of global comparisons of universities and the role that performance indicators can play. It said: “Maintaining a high level of quality is crucial for the attractiveness of higher education. Moreover, in a more global and mobile world, transparency regarding performance of higher education institutions can stimulate competition and cooperation.” But it said that the existing ranking systems were not delivering everything that was needed.

L’Agence d’évaluation de la recherche et de l’enseignement supérieur (AERES) rend public ce jour le rapport d’évaluation du Centre national de la recherche scientifique (CNRS). L’évaluation du CNRS, organisée par l’AERES et effectuée par un comité international d’experts qu’elle a constitué, est achevée. L’objet de cette évaluation est la stratégie de l’organisme et sa traduction opérationnelle, à l’instar de toutes les évaluations d’établissements organisées par l’AERES. Elle est à distinguer de l’évaluation de la qualité de la recherche menée au CNRS, qui est réalisée par ailleurs, dans le cadre de l’évaluation des activités conduites par ses unités de recherche.
