http://www.sciencebasedmedicine.org/ EDITOR’S NOTE: Because I am at the annual meeting of the American Association for Cancer Research in Chicago, between the meetings, working on a policy statement, working on a manuscript, and various other miscellaneous tasks, I alas was unable to produce a post worthy of the quality normally expected by SBM readers. Fortunately, Lorne Trottier, who’s done a great job for us twice before , was able to step in again with this great post about “safe” cell phone cases.

May 17 2012 I hadn’t planned for this topic to take over my blog this week, but it happens. Judging by the comments there is significant interest in the issue of consciousness, and Kastrup and I are just getting to the real nub of the argument. So here is another installment – a reply to Kastrup’s latest offering.

The calendar is one of the most amazing creations of humankind. Including its most obvious of utilities (keeping track of our days and seasons) the calendar is a validation of scientific principles, such as the correct application of the process of predictability – which is to say, a good scientific theory will make certain predictions as a means of testing its validity. So by most measures, the accuracy of The Gregorian Calendar is a pretty damn good system.

In my last post for this blog I discussed the fact that individual scientific studies are insufficient to establish a claim or phenomenon, and yet people often cite a single study as if it offers proof of their position. http://www.randi.org/site/

http://www.skepticblog.org/ Fables should be taught as fables, myths as myths, and miracles as poetic fancies. To teach superstitions as truths is a most terrible thing. The child mind accepts and believes them, and only through great pain and perhaps tragedy can he be in after years relieved of them. In fact, men will fight for a superstition quite as quickly as for a living truth — often more so, since a superstition is so intangible you cannot get at it to refute it, but truth is a point of view, and so is changeable. —Hypatia of Alexandria I happened to be flipping through the cable TV movie channels the other night, and managed to catch the 2009 movie Agora , about the 4th century female astronomer and mathematician Hypatia of Alexandria.

Indian Miracle Man Sai Baba, who was born as Sathyanarayana Raju on 23 November 23 1926 died on 24 April 2011. Though he was caught cheating several times, among other things for producing "holy ash", he had gathered a substantial following, including Indian cricketers Sachin Tendulkar and Sunil Gavaskar , as well as the "atheist" Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu M. Karunanidhi . The following is one of many videos exposing Sai Baba's rather clumsy sleight of hand: http://www.ecso.org/
