Science! Millennium Simulation Project. Introduction: The Millennium Simulation The Millennium Run used more than 10 billion particles to trace the evolution of the matter distribution in a cubic region of the Universe over 2 billion light-years on a side.

Millennium Simulation Project

It kept busy the principal supercomputer at the Max Planck Society's Supercomputing Centre in Garching, Germany for more than a month. By applying sophisticated modelling techniques to the 25 Tbytes of stored output, Virgo scientists have been able to recreate evolutionary histories both for the 20 million or so galaxies which populate this enormous volume and for the supermassive black holes which occasionally power quasars at their hearts. By comparing such simulated data to large observational surveys, one can clarify the physical processes underlying the buildup of real galaxies and black holes. 'Pataphysics. Jarry in Alfortville 'Pataphysics (French: 'pataphysique) is a philosophy or media theory dedicated to studying what lies beyond the realm of metaphysics.

The concept was coined by French writer Alfred Jarry (1873–1907), who defined 'pataphysics as "the science of imaginary solutions, which symbolically attributes the properties of objects, described by their virtuality, to their lineaments".[1] A practitioner of 'pataphysics is a pataphysician or a pataphysicist. Definitions[edit] There are over one hundred differing definitions of pataphysics.[2] Some examples are shown below. "Pataphysics is the science of that which is superinduced upon metaphysics, whether within or beyond the latter’s limitations, extending as far beyond metaphysics as the latter extends beyond physics. … Pataphysics will be, above all, the science of the particular, despite the common opinion that the only science is that of the general.

NASA-backed fusion engine could cut Mars trip down to 30 days

Now a team at the University of Washington, with funding from the space agency, is about to start building a fusion engine that could get humans there in just 30 days and make other forms of space travel obsolete. Destinws2. "Goggle Up!

Chinese physicists measure speed of Einstein’s ‘spooky action at a distance’: At least 10,000 times faster than light. A team of Chinese physicists have clocked the speed of spooky action at a distance — the seemingly instantaneous interaction between entangled quantum particles — at more than four orders of magnitude faster than light.

Chinese physicists measure speed of Einstein’s ‘spooky action at a distance’: At least 10,000 times faster than light

Their equipment and methodology doesn’t allow for an exact speed, but four orders of magnitude puts the figure at around 3 trillion meters per second. Spooky action at a distance was a term coined by Einstein to describe how entangled quantum particles seem to interact with each other instantaneously, over any distance, breaking the speed of light and thus relativity. As of our current understanding of quantum mechanics, though, it is impossible to send data using quantum entanglement, preserving the theory of relativity. Mythical Viking 'Sunstone' could have really worked: study. Bringing the realm of ancient myth into reality, scientists say they have found evidence that the Vikings could have used a 'sunstone' crystal to navigate from northern Europe to North America.

Researchers from the University of Rennes in France say a calcite crystal that was discovered in the wreckage of a 421-year-old ship could be the substance once thought to be no more than an ancient Viking myth. The crystal – called an Iceland spar-- was found 30 years ago amid the wreckage of a ship that sunk off the coast of Alderney in the Channel Islands in 1592. In a report published in The Proceedings of The Royal Society on Wednesday, the study’s authors say the crystal could be used to determine the sun's location with an accuracy of one degree, even when it was invisible to the naked eye. The study's authors said their findings may help identify other crystals used by the Vikings.

Alan Friedman’s Astonishing HD Photographs of the Sun Shot from his Own Backyard. Alan Friedman is a fascinating guy. By day he’s a maker of greeting cards and a lover of hats, but in his spare time he’s a self-proclaimed space cowboy who points a telescope skyward from his backyard in downtown Buffalo, directly into the light of the sun. Using special filters attached to his camera Friedman captures some of the most lovely details of the Sun’s roiling surface. The raw images are colorless and often blurry requiring numerous hours of coloring, adjusting and finessing to tease out the finest details, the results of which hardly resemble what I imagine the 5,500 degree (Celsius) surface of Sun might look like.

Whether I listen to my brain, or my heart, I stilldon't understand how these damn things work When I told my Graphic Design professor that I wanted to transfer to a school offering Industrial Design, she warned me "Well, if you're going to study ID you're going to have to be able to flip things around in your head, you'll need a strong grasp of 3D. " Luckily I had it, and after I made my transfer, orthographics became second nature. That was years ago, and orthographics, of course, are not true 3D. John Templeton Foundation : Does the Universe Have a Purpose? Neural Correlates of Lyrical Improvisation: An fMRI Study of Freestyle Rap : Scientific Reports. In this study, we used fMRI to investigate the neural correlates of spontaneous lyrical improvisation by comparing spontaneous freestyle rap to conventional rehearsed performance.

Our results reveal characteristic patterns of activity associated with this novel form of lyrical improvisation, and may also provide more general insights into the creative process itself. It has been suggested that the creative behaviors could occur in two stages: an improvisatory phase characterized by generation of novel material and a phase in which this material is re-evaluated and revised1.

The present study may provide clues to the mechanisms that underlie the initial, improvisatory phase. Caffeine!! - Bite Sci-zed. Apple remembers Steve Jobs with video. Post Writer Badge. Warp Drive May Be More Feasible Than Thought, Scientists Say. HOUSTON — A warp drive to achieve faster-than-light travel — a concept popularized in television's Star Trek — may not be as unrealistic as once thought, scientists say. A warp drive would manipulate space-time itself to move a starship, taking advantage of a loophole in the laws of physics that prevent anything from moving faster than light.

A concept for a real-life warp drive was suggested in 1994 by Mexican physicist Miguel Alcubierre, however subsequent calculations found that such a device would require prohibitive amounts of energy. Now physicists say that adjustments can be made to the proposed warp drive that would enable it to run on significantly less energy, potentially brining the idea back from the realm of science fiction into science. It’s an interesting question that isn’t entirely straightforward as it can depend on things such as, relative size to the entire night sky vs what we typically see in our field of view when we look at the moon.
