Au cours des dernières années, un mouvement d’ouverture des bases de données et une diffusion large des ressources numérisées se sont développés dans les bibliothèques et les musées du monde entier, avec des millions de livres et d’images mis en ligne.
La NYPL (bibliothèque publique de la ville de New York) s’inscrit dans ce mouvement alors qu’entrent dans le domaine public des trésors de la collection de la bibliothèque de New York City, qui porte notamment sur « des cartes historiques, illustrations botaniques, manuscrits, photographies uniques, et anciens textes religieux ». Cette bibliothèque met ainsi à disposition plus de 180 000 images libres de droit qui comprennent : L’exploration et le téléchargement des images se fait via un outil de visualisation particulièrement simple et original, très accessible aux élèves comme aux non anglophones.

Collection History This group of maps includes the extent of NYPL's holding of real estate maps by William Perris (d.1862), the English-trained civil engineer and surveyor who originated the format.
The Perris maps depict Manhattan and Brooklyn in the 1850s-1860s, when the two boroughs were still separate cities; their sequencing replicates their original published volumes. Commonly called "fire insurance maps," these maps show streets, blocks, tax lots, and current use classifications; they also indicate locations of former streams and related natural features, earlier roads, previous land uses, lot lines, and more.
Other makers or publishers over time include Hyde, Hopkins, Bromley, and the most recent and prolific, Sanborn. Today, "Sanborn" has become shorthand for "fire insurance map" to a wide range of map users in local government and the real estate, hazard insurance and related industries, throughout the nation and the world. This Collection was donated to NSCC COGS by Walter Morrison, Cartographer Emeritus of COGS who was interested in antique maps as an illustration of the evolution of map making technology. It is a mixed media print collection of historical maps, atlases, periodicals and books that is focused on the early mapping of Atlantic Canada and specifically Nova Scotia. La cartothèque de swisstopo regroupe pour l’essentiel la totalité des premières éditions et l’intégralité des états de mise à jour des cartes officielles que sont la « carte Dufour », la « carte Siegfried » et les cartes nationales de même que les bases qui leur sont associées, pour partie dessinées à la main. Son catalogue est consultable en ligne. Toutes les feuilles des cartes nationales peuvent être obtenues sous forme numérique. Valeurs clés et caractéristiques La cartothèque de swisstopo contient les plus anciennes géodonnées de référence de Suisse, à savoir les cartes officielles établies à partir de 1840 et les bases qui leur sont associées, en grande partie manuscrites.
Avec ses 29'000 cartes imprimées et ses 23'000 cartes manuscrites (pièces uniques dessinées à la main), elle constitue la plus riche collection de géodonnées historiques de Suisse. Cet atlas a été publié en 1830 à Londres pas Edward Quin et utilise 21 cartes en couleurs pour montrer l’évolution des connaissances géographiques à différentes périodes avec la première montrant le monde connu, l’Éden, de la Création au Déluge, en 2348 AEC, jusqu’à la dernière qui montre le monde presque complet et la fin de la paix générale en 1828 avec une vision de l’histoire et de la géographie très occidentale et biblique.
Les cartes sont colorées pour montrer les changements géopolitiques et sont accompagnées d’un texte qui explique les événements qui ont amenés les changements dans les cartes. La particularité la plus intéressante de cet atlas est la présence dans les illustrations d’un épais brouillard ou de nuages noirs qui obstruent la vision complète du monde et qui se dissipent au fur et à mesure des découvertes géographiques. C’est à ma connaissance la première fois qu’un « brouillard de guerre » a été utilisé de cette manière pour symboliser des découvertes géographiques.
Accès géographique | Gallica. A petites échelles, ces cartes permettent de se représenter le territoire, mais sont insuffisantes pour agir sur le terrain. Au contraire, les plans de places fortes, de marches et de batailles ou encore les cartes des frontières et de l’état-major (XIXe siècle) ont été dressés sur place par des ingénieurs militaires pour servir à la défense ou aux accroissements du royaume, en portant si besoin la guerre hors de France.
Avec les plans d’arpentage, plans terriers et cadastraux se met en place un outil précieux de l’administration fiscale. Les cartes topographiques –telle la fameuse ‘Carte de Cassini’ (XVIIIe siècle) –, les plans d’embellissements urbains, les cartes des ressources géologiques et minières ou les cartes issues de la Statistique nationale, déploient sous nos yeux une vision rapprochée du territoire, formant autant d’outils d’analyse, de gestion ou de mise en valeur du pays. Si elles ont perdu aujourd’hui leur apparence d’objectivité et d’évidence, qualités supposées qui enchantèrent naguère des générations d’utilisateurs de la carte d’Etat-major, elles n’ont en rien perdu de leur pouvoir de séduction. Bien au contraire, elles se sont diversifiées et banalisées avec les outils informatiques mis à la disposition de tout un chacun. Conçue par un cartographe professionnel ou un amateur, la carte est tributaire des connaissances, des outils et des objectifs poursuivis tout autant que des conventions sémiologiques de son temps.
