Stanley Kubrick

Welcome.
We’re all in that humanistic mode of evaluating our lives – coming up on the end of the year and the last time a zero will be the third digit on our calendars.

The 20 Best Films of the Decade

I love movies and I love lists, so I hereby present my list of the 20 best movies of the decade. http://ittakesahero.blogspot.com/2010/01/20-best-films-of-decade.html

Most Overlooked of the Last Decade

When people look back on the early years of the new millennium they'll remember it for movies like The Dark Knight and Lord of the Rings . Or they'll geek out with their friends about the cult classics they discovered together, rewatching copies of the original version of Donnie Darko or spreading around copies of Idiocracy and laughing at its accuracy. http://www.cinemablend.com/new/You-Missed-It-Most-Unfairly-Overlooked-Movies-Of-The-Decade-16012.html

We are leaving Kubrick behind and fast approaching Hyams. If you get that reference, go grab yourself a cookie. It is time for us to reflect back on the decade that was.

100 Best Movies of All Time

The best movies evoke tears, laughter, terror, reminiscence, and/or mystery in a truly personal way. Anything less (AKA, around 98% of all movies) serves no purpose other than to shove mindless, forgettable fodder in our face and line Hollywood’s pockets (Be afraid Michael Bay, be VERY afraid). This is that other , sacred 2%—the Holy Grail of cinema.

Movies More Complicated Than Inception

I suppose that this is somehow, unofficially, “ Inception week” here at Unreality, what with seemingly half our posts somehow related to Christopher Nolan’s latest film. The concepts of idea inception and dreams within dreams aren’t your everyday, run-0f-the-mill plot devices, and for a summer blockbuster, they’re about as complex and layered as you’ll see. Still, Inception is really not that complicated , especially considering that Nolan holds your hand and gives you a tutorial via dialogue for the first third of the movie. http://unrealitymag.com/index.php/2010/07/22/complicated-movies-and-inception/
The best teen movies reflect modern youth culture and alter it—they transform the vernacular, fashion, and the trajectory of the genre itself. They are original and smart (even mid-dick joke). Some are raunchy comedies, some are stark dramas, some defy classification, but all are unflinchingly honest (even mid-dick joke).

The 15 Best Miramax Films

Banksy didn’t win an Academy Award, wasn’t spotted at the show and didn’t even bother to vandalize the Kodiak Theater restrooms – disappointing stuff, we know.
There are plenty of jokes made at the expense of philosophy students. (My favorite goes: "The Italian word for philosophy major is ‘barista.’")

Must-See of Summer 2011

Last summer was a good (not great) movie season. Granted, there were some notorious duds with Robin Hood , Jonah Hex , Avatar: The Last Whatever-It’s-Called , the one where Jake Gyllenhaal talked real funny and had his shirt off a lot, and many, many others. And, of course, there were some rather disappointing missed opportunities (*COUGH* Iron Man 2 *COUGH*).
