Some thoughts on authentic listening materials

It’s about time I started reflecting on it. I haven’t had time to do so as it’s a very busy role – hence the lack of blog activity. I’m currently writing lessons for a functional, task-led syllabus. There’s a strong focus on speaking, listening and pronunciation. Each lesson has a listening text (well, bout 90% of them do) which is a model for the main task that students complete during a lesson. I’ve been thinking quite a bit about the nature of these listening materials since starting the job (and even since teaching the product). During my diploma days (that’s only 2 years ago) I was really keen on using authentic listening materials in class, and strongly advocated these over the use of commercially produced passages (i.e. those often found in coursebooks).

The same year, British writer George Nicol published a version in rhyme based upon Southey's prose tale, with Southey approving the attempt to bring the story more exposure. Both versions tell of three bears and an old woman who trespasses upon their property. "The Story of the Three Bears" was in circulation before the publication of Southey's 1837 version. In 1831, for example, Eleanor Mure fashioned a handmade booklet about the three bears for her nephew's birthday, and, in 1813, Southey was telling the story to friends. "The Story of the Three Bears" experienced two significant changes during its early publication history. (Wikipedia) Click on "Read more" to listen the audio book. Free Online IELTS Listening Test.

They include: If the teacher is doing more talking than the students, then this is a problem. One of the biggest gifts we, as educators, can give to our learners is to be truly present for them; to deeply listen to what they have to say.
