Looper. Paper planes - Joris Laarman Lab. Year: 2010 Material: paper planes/ electronics Originally shown as a concept design for the 50th anniversary of Guggenheim Museum building in New York. Together with Dutch entertainment company USE, MIT and aerodynamics engineer David Lentink we are working of the largest swarm of individually flying objects in the world. Our aim in 100 archetypical paper planes flying in a loop at the museum central rotunda. Our main objective is to create a poetic looking and beautifully moving installation that interacts with its surroundings. The installation makes the space a vivarium with swarming paper planes. Nieuwe groeten uit… (“New greetings from…”) is a crowd-sourced, crowd-curated exposition in the city of Arnhem in the east of the Netherlands. Last Thursday my museum opened the last part of the yearlong project. In many ways it’s a special exposition and project, I think, and worth sharing. Somewhat over a year ago FOAM photography museum Amsterdam, the ANP Historical Archive and the Museum of National History of the Netherlands came together to find a replacement for the traditional postcards. Most postcards show an old-fashioned image of Holland: cheese, cows and wooden shoes.
The Netherlands has changed significantly over the last years, and Nieuwe Groeten Uit… was a search for new postcards. Une famille est née autour d'une conversation... C'est sous l'oeil bienveillant du designer Sam Baron, à la tête de la section design de Fabrica, le centre de recherche de Benetton qui accueille via une bourse des jeunes talents du monde entier, que cette famille de meubles a vu le jour. Avec un groupe de designer, il est parti à la rencontre des acteurs d'un lieu de culture, le Grand Hornu, en Belgique. Une semaine de discussion, de réflexion, d'interaction entre les jeunes designers et les employés du Grand-Hornu autour de la thématique émotionnelle de l'objet préféré : tout le monde en à un, il est lié à notre histoire personnelle, il raconte quelque chose qui se situe dans le registre de l'intime, qui dans ce cadre spécifique se partage.

The lectern was placed in public spaces around New York and then left alone. We wanted to see what would happen if New Yorkers were given the opportunity to amplify their voices to “say something nice.” Say Something Nice was produced by Improv Everywhere as part of the Guggenheim Museum exhibition stillspotting nyc. In the Netherlands trees typically reach only one tenth of the age that they could make. For Raw Color and studio Maarten Kolk & Guus Kusters trees are anything but static.
