Writing errors make you look bad. I’m here to help. I’ve seen a lot of grammar problems, clichés, awkward usage and just plain awful writing tics in my time, and so I’m on a mission: I’d like to cleanse the Internet of all its amateurish writing. But I’m scared. Writing about grammar and usage is precarious. What if I get something wrong? What if I use a cliché while slamming cliché usage? Here’s how I start my impossible mission, pointing out 50 writing errors you must avoid if you’d like to write like a pro:Its/it’s: Memorize this, study it, do something, because some readers think this error is so abhorrent, they will stop reading the instant they see you misuse it.For free: The word “for” is not necessary. “Amazing” is elbowing in to take the place of “awesome.” In order to: There’s rarely a case when you need to use this phrase. “Like” instead of “such as:” If something is like something else, then you’re not referring to that thing.

Learning how to code can be a daunting task for anyone, whether you’re a complete beginner or an experienced professional. Just getting started is hard enough, but sometimes the best still get stuck. Reverse Engineering If you’ve never coded before, Treehouse is a great way to get started. Once you have your footing and you know a language or two, it’s easy to understand code you’ve never seen by reverse engineering, or as I like to call it, “breaking stuff” to see how it works. This method rarely gets the emphasis it deserves (especially in formal educational environments), yet it’s amazing how useful it is for learning.

Now before you take a proverbial hammer to your favorite website, you should know that you can’t just break anything with reckless abandon and expect to learn something. Learn to Break Stuff Recently I was forced to do some reverse engineering in order to advance my own knowledge. Learn programming. What Language Should You Build Your App With? Mobile developers across the globe have developed and released more than 650,000 iPhone apps, 400,000 iPad apps, and 600,000 apps for Android. Are you thinking about building an app? A key step in the process is choosing the right programming language, which depends on how scrappy you're willing to be. Make sure you've researched cross-platform app design and reviewed the common pitfalls of developing your app.

Decide on your audience and what platform you'll use, and then weigh your options to select a language. What languages have you used to build your app, and why did you choose that one? Let us know in the comments. Objective-C Objective-C is the iOS standard, considerd the "correct" language, according to Stephen Kaliski, who works for NYC-based start-up Poptip. How to Present to Investors When my co-founders and I started our first company, we didn't know anyone. So when we tried to raise money, it was hard to get first meetings at venture firms. But what was even harder was that, even after getting in the room, many investors barely seemed to pay attention.

We were rejected up and down Sand Hill Road. Then we figured out what we were doing wrong, changed our approach, and got 3 term sheets within a couple of weeks.... read When my co-founders and I started our first company, we didn't know anyone. You know how security people get all uppity about SSL this and SSL that? Stuff like posting creds over HTTPS isn’t enough, you have to load login forms over HTTPS as well and then you can’t send auth cookies over HTTP because they’ll get sniffed and sessions hijacked and so on and so forth. This is all pretty much security people rhetoric designed to instil fear but without a whole lot of practical basis, right? That’s an easy assumption to make because it’s hard to observe the risk of insufficient transport layer protection being exploited, at least compared to something like XSS or SQL injection. But it turns out that exploiting unprotected network traffic can actually be extremely simple, you just need to have the right gear. Say hello to my little friend: This, quite clearly, is a Pineapple.

UI Kit stands for User Interface Kit and is basically a small collection of flexible, separated jQuery JavaScript elements for the contemporary Internet. It is quite simple to style UI kit highlighting a CSS structure in order to match an application without any preprocessor variables. UI kits include different items of User Interface such as call-to-action buttons, navigation menus, forms and others.

The advantages of UI kits are extremely important for both creators and users, therefore UI kits are widely spread online both free and for a fixed price. It is a fairly new solution that helps designers save time in their work: they don’t have to create a new graphical entity, but they get to modify the UI kit in accordance to their requirements and desires. As it has been already mentioned above, the UI kits can be free or paid, they are also created for all kinds of computer devices: from PC and laptops, to mobile phones and tablets. 1. When a deadline isn’t met, it is often because of a breakdown in one or more of these four areas: Time managementPrioritizingImpulse controlCommunication Time management Most people underestimate the amount of time it takes to complete a task. They forget to include extraneous time into their estimations for interruptions, recovery time to regain focus after an interruption, restroom and lunch breaks, their mind wandering, etc. To get a more realistic idea of how long it takes you to do something, start timing your processes throughout the course of a day. How often does a coworker interrupt your work and for how long? In the meantime, I recommend doubling your time estimations for completing a task.

Also, remember that your coworkers and clients are also underestimating the length of time it will take them to complete work. Prioritizing Impulse control Simply acknowledging that you are not controlling your impulses will often be enough to get you back on track with your work. Communication. Charles Howerton on the jobsite wearing and using his ELSA device. Imagine yourself in the middle of an important project. You need to tell your workers about a crucial step in the building process. You attempt to speak with them, but all you get in return are several confused faces. You’re clearly not getting through.

This was the place Charles Howerton found himself seven years ago. Born out of frustration With 17 years of construction industry experience under his belt, Howerton knew the ins and outs of the business. After a hailstone storm hit Minnesota in 2005, Howerton’s company faced a huge influx of work. To communicate with these new workers, he hired a bilingual interpreter. The issue came to a head when Howerton needed several Hispanic landscape workers to move out of the way at a multifamily housing project he needed to access. “It was like synchronized swimming,” says Howerton of how quickly the workers moved. Looking back on this early phase of our company, we thought it would be helpful to talk about how we got to our first $5,000 in monthly recurring revenue. As we continue to grow and hopefully reach $25,000, $50,000 and $100,000 in monthly recurring revenue, we'll follow up with new blog posts detailing how getting to each milestone is different than the one before.

Let's get to it. Step 0: Find A Problem Worth Solving As web developers, we consistently rely on a multitude of web services to build our applications. While we do take the time to build exception handling into our apps, often times our relationships with our outside providers are at best opaque and we are left in the dark when it comes to outages and server incidents. Guild Wars 2 Discussion - Best class for a solo player? I play all 8 classes and Warrior is easily the one that can tear through PvE with the least effort/thought put into it. Every class can be used to solo, but for easy mindless tearing through things, go Warrior. Warrior is very bad at healing and getting rid of conditions but can tear through groups before healing becomes an issue, usually. You didn’t play Ranger properly if you think Warrior is a better solo PvE class. There is nothing in this game that can touch a Ranger for solo PvE leveling. For levelling I tend to agree.

My Ranger hit 50 in the time it took for my Warrior to hit 30. I would recommend against a glass-cannon and/or pet-unfriendly build, for levelling, though. Also, for god’s sake, if you pet is low on health, and you aren’t casting a heal, swap them and get the 20s cooldown instead of the 60s one! Interesting Stuff. Essential Math for Games Programmers. As the quality of games has improved, more attention has been given to all aspects of a game to increase the feeling of reality during gameplay and distinguish it from its competitors. Mathematics provides much of the groundwork for this improvement in realism. And a large part of this improvement is due to the addition of physical simulation.

Creating such a simulation may appear to be a daunting task, but given the right background it is not too difficult, and can add a great deal of realism to animation systems, and interactions between avatars and the world. This tutorial deepens the approach of the previous years' Essential Math for Games Programmers, by spending one day on general math topics, and one day focusing in on the topic of physical simulation. It, like the previous tutorials, provides a toolbox of techniques for programmers, with references and links for those looking for more information. Topics for the various incarnations of this tutorial can be found below. Slides.
