Motivational Speaker Goes Off Script To Give “Disrespectful” Students A Reality Check. A motivational speaker took a moment of disrespect during his speech and turned it into a lesson. According to Pix11, Eric Thomas, a.k.a “The Hip Hop Preacher,” spoke off script during a speech he gave at Vashon High School in St. Louis on Feb. 22. According to the video, Vashon is one of the lowest performing schools in the district. Thomas was discussing how he was homeless for two years before meeting a preacher and turning his life around, when a group of students began to speak when he was speaking. “Listen to me very closely. Then, things got real. “You got the nerve to act the fool when somebody cares about you? Thomas later said that the students need to take school seriously because people like him want to see black youth succeed in a world that tries to make them fail. “I ain’t stupid.
The vid ends with “always know where you’re going, but never forget …where you come from.” Check out this incredible moment below. George Carlin. Q: What rating will your upcoming HBO special get? A: Under the new rating system? I don't know all the terminology of that system yet. Q: Somewhere around an NC-17? A: Or NC-35, even. Q: Has censorship gotten stronger or weaker during your years in the business? A: I think the trend to control speech -- and therefore thought -- continues. Q: You have called baby boomers whiny, sarcastic, narcissistic, self-indulgent, cold, bloodless people... A: ...This is rhetoric. Q: But aren't boomers the main audience for HBO? A: Baby boomers helped me a great deal in my career. Q: What went wrong? A: The two big mistakes were the belief in a sky god -- that there's a man in the sky with 10 things he doesn't want you to do and you'll burn for a long time if you do them -- and private property, which I think is at the core of our failure as a species.
Q: Is there anyone or anything you like? A: I love individuals. We use up words like "spiritual" so fast in this culture. Q: Right there with Bill Clinton. On the Phenomenon of Bullshit Jobs | Strike! Magazine. Ever had the feeling that your job might be made up? That the world would keep on turning if you weren’t doing that thing you do 9-5? David Graeber explored the phenomenon of bullshit jobs for our recent summer issue – everyone who’s employed should read carefully… On the Phenomenon of Bullshit Jobs by David Graeber. In the year 1930, John Maynard Keynes predicted that, by century’s end, technology would have advanced sufficiently that countries like Great Britain or the United States would have achieved a 15-hour work week. There’s every reason to believe he was right. Why did Keynes’ promised utopia – still being eagerly awaited in the ‘60s – never materialise? So what are these new jobs, precisely? These are what I propose to call “bullshit jobs.”
It’s as if someone were out there making up pointless jobs just for the sake of keeping us all working. The answer clearly isn’t economic: it’s moral and political. This is a profound psychological violence here. Pick up your copy of STRIKE! Our Vision & Mission. Our Vision We envision an education that promotes the exploration of meaning, purpose and values and seeks to serve our common human future. An education that enables and enhances personal introspection and contemplation leads to the realization of our inextricable connection to each other, opening the heart and mind to true community, deeper insight, sustainable living, and a more just society. Though powerful and vitally important, the conventional methods of scientific research, pedagogy, and critical scholarship need to be broadened.
The experiential methods developed within the contemplative traditions offer a rich set of tools for exploring the mind, the heart, and the world. When they are combined with conventional practices, an enriched research methodology and pedagogy become available for deepening and enlarging perspectives, leading to lasting solutions to the problems we confront. Say what? 10 meaningless sales terms. At one time, these phrases made a real impact on potential customers. Not anymore. Words—spoken or written—can make sales happen. Or not. Read Web copy and brochures. Listen to salespeople. Once those words made a real impact. If the following terms are used in your marketing, advertising, or sales processes, put yourself in the customer’s position and consider their reaction—because that's the only reaction that matters: “Exceed expectations.” Just tell me exactly what you will do. “Customer focused.” Explain in concrete terms how you will meet my specific needs. “Best in class.” But maybe you are that wonderful. “Low-hanging fruit.” No business wants to hear they have low-hanging fruit.
“Unique.” If a customer is considering whether to hire your firm or buy your products, “unique” means nothing to them. “Value added.” Tell me the deal, explain all the options and add-ons, and help me figure out how I can take full advantage of what you provide. “Turn key.” “Expert.” “Outstanding ROI.” Why Women Aren't Funny. From the John Springer Collection/Corbis. Be your gender what it may, you will certainly have heard the following from a female friend who is enumerating the charms of a new (male) squeeze: "He's really quite cute, and he's kind to my friends, and he knows all kinds of stuff, and he's so funny … " (If you yourself are a guy, and you know the man in question, you will often have said to yourself, "Funny?
He wouldn't know a joke if it came served on a bed of lettuce with sauce béarnaise. ") However, there is something that you absolutely never hear from a male friend who is hymning his latest (female) love interest: "She's a real honey, has a life of her own … [interlude for attributes that are none of your business] … and, man, does she ever make 'em laugh. " Now, why is this? Why is it the case? , I mean. Why are women, who have the whole male world at their mercy, not funny? All right—try it the other way (as the bishop said to the barmaid).
