Overwhelmed? Welcome the Age of Curation | Epicenter

Forrester Research analyst Sarah Rotman Epps coined a phrase Friday for something many have been talking about since Apple launched the iPad about six weeks ago. “Curated computing” refers to the way Apple staff examines each piece of software written for iPhone OS devices before allowing it into (or blocking it from) the App Store. Epps is almost certainly not among the first 10,000 people on the planet to observe that the iPhone OS does not allow users to install whatever programs they wish, unless the devices are jailbroken . For that reason, it’s tempting to write off her coinage as an attention-grabbing rehash of a well-worn meme — especially because she plans to take this show on the road at conferences to talk about this observation. That knowledge itself is anything but revelatory to anyone who has been paying even slight attention to what has already been said about the iPhone OS over the past few years. http://www.wired.com/business/2010/05/feeling-overwhelmed-welcome-the-age-of-curation/

5 New Paradigms for a Socially Engaged Company

http://mashable.com/2011/01/13/socially-engaged-company/ Soren Gordhamer is the organizer of the Wisdom 2.0 Conference , which brings together staff from Google, Facebook, Twitter and Zynga with others to explore living with awareness and wisdom in our modern age, at the end of February in Silicon Valley. He is SorenG on Twitter. The age of social media is not just changing our personal lives, but is increasingly affecting how business is conducted. No longer satisfied with strictly top-down models that view employees as cogs in a system, businesses are quickly adapting to a new paradigm that emphasizes connection, collaboration and innovation. When people in companies and teams feel engaged, the benefits are significant. Towers Watson (formerly Towers Perrin), the global professional services firm, interviewed 90,000 employees in 18 countries, and found “companies with high employee engagement had a 19% increase in operating income and almost a 28% growth in earnings per share.

Named Entity Recognition (NER) labels sequences of words in a text which are the names of things, such as person and company names, or gene and protein names. The software provides a general (arbitrary order) implementation of linear chain Conditional Random Field (CRF) sequence models, coupled with well-engineered feature extractors for Named Entity Recognition. (CRF models were pioneered by Lafferty, McCallum, and Pereira (2001) ; see Sutton and McCallum (2006) for a better introduction.)

Editors as Curators: What's Taking So Long?

These are tough times for editors. Senior editors are being forced to make deep, painful cuts in their newsrooms. Assignment editors are being phased out at some papers, seen as extraneous layers in the production process.

Content Aggregation: The Future of (B2B and Consumer) Media?

September 21, 2010 “Traditional” media is struggling. Weekly news magazines are declining, newspapers are shriveling, and industry trade magazines are downsizing.
Entity extraction (EE) is the identification and semantic categorization of the participants in a piece of text. Important top-level named entity types include people, organizations, locations, and products. In addition, some specific abstract concepts are also classified by EE systems; these include dates, times, and other quantities. The meaning of documents annotated with named entities can be exploited by people and machines for a wide range of useful purposes.

The Social Data Revolution(s) - Andreas Weigend - Now, New, Next

by Andreas Weigend | 4:58 PM May 20, 2009 In 2009, more data will be generated by individuals than in the entire history of mankind through 2008. Information overload is more serious than ever. What are the implications for marketing? The world has witnessed two revolutions in the way consumer data has been solicited and collected. And consumers have changed the way they use the web to converse, shop and transact.

On-Demand Platform for Semantic Processing by REST API - Blog - Extractiv

Today Extractiv gives you a little more control over your ability to manage your content by launching our new On-Demand platform . On-Demand complements Extractiv's existing Crawling platform . The Crawling platform provides users with a means to transform the output of large web crawls into structured content through batch jobs. By contrast, the On-Demand platform enables users to process their own documents and URLs one at a time. On-Demand gives you two additional types of control that may be necessary for certain applications: Immediate responses to requests, which enables use in a live application.
