Laura Fantini. Italian artist Laura Fantini, who divides her time between Bologna, Italy and Brooklyn, NY, creates large scale images of intimate still life subjects.
Her compositions feature unassumingly simple objects like leaves, seed pods and flower blossoms, rendered in large sizes, perhaps 30×40 inches (74x98cm). Her subjects are observed with the precision of botanical art, but presented with a visual drama and freshness that pull them out of their normal context and present them to us as something to be viewed and considered anew. She works primarily in colored pencil, a medium that seldom receives the respect warranted by the effects that can be achieved in the hands of an artist like Fantini.

Artist Xavier Casalta (previously) wows us again with his miraculous patience and steady hand in this latest illustration titled Autumn, a flowing depiction of intertwined flowers, gourds, plants, and other vegetation.
Casalta uses a technique called stippling, where a multitude of tiny ink dots are made it various patterns to create shadows, lines, and textures throughout the piece. The 23-year-old illustrator estimates Autumn contains roughly 7 million dots applied over a staggering period of 370 hours. You can see more close-up views of the piece here. Artist Nicolas Delort lives and works in the suburbs of Paris where he creates evocative and imposing illustrations using ink and scratchboard.
Each piece represents a moment from an unknown narrative leaving me filled with questions in the same way Chris van Allsburg’s The Mysteries of Harris Burdick leaves you curious of the circumstances behind each image. Delort is officially represented by Shannon Associates where you can see much more of his work and hopefully hire him to illustrate a graphic novel that I will wait in line to purchase.
You can also follow him on Tumblr. (via behance) Update: An earlier version of this post referred to these illustrations as being “Unknown Narratives” which is not entirely true. Patience & Discipline: This Piece Took Us 300 Hours To Complete. This project is a collaboration between Rémy Boiré and I, Xavier Casalta.

I have been practicing pointillism for over a year now and discovered this technique by chance while I was learning typography and wanted to experiment with something else other than solid black letters.
This time-consuming technique (4-8 dots per second) is interesting because you need to look closely at the illustration to realize that it’s made of thousands of dots. Rémy is a 23-year-old freelance hand-letterer and graphic designer who also works on illustrations to explore new horizons when he’s not working for clients. Prints are available here.
