IEEE InfoVis is the primary meeting in the field of information visualization. Computer-based information visualization centers around helping people explore or explain data through interactive software that exploits the capabilities of the human perceptual system. A key challenge in information visualization is designing a cognitively useful spatial mapping of a dataset that is not inherently spatial and accompanying the mapping by interaction techniques that allow people to intuitively explore the dataset. Information visualization draws on the intellectual history of several traditions, including computer graphics, human-computer interaction, cognitive psychology, semiotics, graphic design, statistical graphics, cartography, and art. Our annual workshops have been a great gathering place for editors, publishers, designers, illustrators, photographers, programmers and other journalists from around the world.
The variety of seminars at the annual workshop have been conducted with experts and the best resources in the field. The first workshop sponsored by SND took place in Chicago in 1979, and was attended by 150 people. These numbers increased rapidly and years later, the 1995 workshop in Barcelona, Spain, drew 752 attendees. This was the first time the Society’s annual workshop was held outside North America. It was named El Congreso Mundial (SND’s “World Congress”); and the tremendous response — delegates from 37 nations — indicated a broader and more international interest in newspaper design and graphics that continues to grow.

Protovis. Protovis composes custom views of data with simple marks such as bars and dots. Unlike low-level graphics libraries that quickly become tedious for visualization, Protovis defines marks through dynamic properties that encode data, allowing inheritance, scales and layouts to simplify construction. Protovis is free and open-source, provided under the BSD License. It uses JavaScript and SVG for web-native visualizations; no plugin required (though you will need a modern web browser)! Although programming experience is helpful, Protovis is mostly declarative and designed to be learned by example. Protovis is no longer under active development.The final release of Protovis was v3.3.1 (4.7 MB).

The Rise and Fall of Swivel.com. Earlier this summer, the visualization website Swivel.com disappeared from the internet. To find out what happened, I tracked down and interviewed Swivel’s two founders, Brian Mulloy and Dmitry Dimov. The following is an edited combination of two interviews I conducted separately with Brian Mulloy (who served as CEO for two years) and Dmitry Dimov (Chief of Product), interspersed with some additional thoughts.
