Boost for UK as London voted one of the world’s top three cities in global study. London has been voted one of the world’s favourite cities in the largest ever global survey of its kind by Ipsos MORI, covering 18,000 people in 24 countries.

In the latest boost to the UK economy, London beat dozens of global commercial centres including Shanghai, Tokyo and Abu Dhabi. London and Paris are ranked global joint 2nd overall and joint 1st as the top European cities In each of 24 countries we asked people to choose from a list of 48 major cities and asked which ones were the best to do business in, which were best to live in and which people most wanted to visit. London was one of only two cities to make the top five in EVERY category - the only other city that did as well was New York. The Ipsos Top Cities Study’s overall global winners were New York followed by London, Paris, Abu Dhabi and Sydney (which came top for British people as the city they most want to live in).

Each city was given an overall score based on the sum of responses across all three categories. Party politics - not quite right. Generation Y, the youngest adult generation, have recently been called Dave’s No 1 Fans, Thatcher’s Children, The Boris Generation or just plain Generation Right.

Much of this discussion draws on our analysis – and there is some truth in the conclusions. But it paints a picture of party political allegiance that is not quite right - and more importantly, risks missing the much bigger issue of a frightening generational shift away from any sort of party political engagement.
