Many people find the concepts in physics challenging to wrap their head around. Visual aids and explanations can definitely help, though. The Youtube Channel Minute Physics videos do just that. Growing gap between longest and shortest lifespans in the US emphasizes the need for policy action. The national life expectancy in the US has increased since 1980, but improvement depends on where you live One county’s life expectancy comparable to Sudan and Iraq “Policy changes at all levels gravely needed to reduce inequality in the health of Americans” SEATTLE – Babies born today in 13 US counties have shorter expected lifespans than their parents did when they were born decades ago, according to a new study.

Growing gap between longest and shortest lifespans in the US emphasizes the need for policy action

For example, life expectancy at birth in Owsley County, Kentucky, was 72.4 in 1980, dropping to 70.2 in 2014. The gap between counties with the highest and lowest life expectancies is larger now than it was back in 1980 – a more than a 20-year difference in 2014 – highlighting massive and growing inequality in the health of Americans. Clusters of counties with low life expectancies were also identified in Kentucky, West Virginia, Alabama, and several states along the Mississippi River.

In 2014, the United States spent $9,237 per person on health care. Media contact: Video Proof That the Universe Is Not an Entirely Logical Place. In Brief The standard model of physics is perfect when we're looking at matter on an observable scale.

Microbiologists unravel relationship among plants, mycorrhizal fungi. An ancient, mutually beneficial relationship between plants and fungi could make agriculture more sustainable by reducing the need for chemical fertilizers, according to professor Heike Bücking of the South Dakota State University Department of Biology and Microbiology.

Microbiologists unravel relationship among plants, mycorrhizal fungi

For more than 500 million years, the majority of land plants have shared their carbohydrates with arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi that colonize their root systems, Bücking explained. In exchange, these fungi provide plants with nitrogen and phosphorous and improve the stress resistance of their hosts. These fungi, which are seen as living fossils, explore the soil with their hyphae in the search for nutrients and deliver these nutrients to their hosts. As reward, the host plant transfers anywhere from 4 to 20 percent of its photosynthetically fixed carbon to these mycorrhizal symbionts.

The LHC Just Discovered A New System of Five Particles. A Unique Find The Large Hadron Collider (LHC), the latest addition to CERN’s accelerator complex, is the most powerful particle accelerator ever built.

The LHC Just Discovered A New System of Five Particles

It features a 27 kilometer (16 mile) ring made of superconducting magnets and accelerating structures built to boost the energy of particles in the chamber. In the accelerator, two high-energy particle beams are forced to collide from opposite directions at speeds close to the speed of light. The energy densities that are created when these collisions occur cause ordinary matter to melt into its constituent parts—quarks and gluons. Scientists have confirmed a brand new form of matter: time crystals. For months now, there's been speculation that researchers might have finally created time crystals - strange crystals that have an atomic structure that repeats not just in space, but in time, putting them in perpetual motion without energy.

Scientists have confirmed a brand new form of matter: time crystals

Now it's official - researchers have just reported in detail how to make and measure these bizarre crystals. And two independent teams of scientists claim they've actually created time crystals in the lab based off this blueprint, confirming the existence of an entirely new form of matter. The discovery might sound pretty abstract, but it heralds in a whole new era in physics - for decades we've been studying matter that's defined as being 'in equilibrium', such as metals and insulators. But it's been predicted that there are many more strange types of matter out there in the Universe that aren't in equilibrium that we haven't even begun to look into, including time crystals. And now we know they're real. Most Popular Baby Names by State 1910-2015.

Area 51 revealed in new Google timelapse video

The Nevada-based military testing facility has been a focal point of many conspiracy theorists and UFOlogists since the late 1970s, who claim that the base houses secretive alien technology. Now, a Google timelapse has revealed how the mysterious base has developed over the past 32 years. This animation reveals how Area 51 has evolved since 1984 using Google Earth's timelapse feature. The images were captured using Google's timelapse feature. Researchers discover a totally unexpected behaviour of water inside carbon nanotubes. We all know that, at sea level, water starts to boil at 100 degrees Celsius (212 degrees Fahrenheit).

Researchers discover a totally unexpected behaviour of water inside carbon nanotubes

And in very confined spaces, researchers have long observed that this boiling point can change, usually dropping by several degrees. But now a team has shown for the first time that water confined in carbon nanotubes - some of the tiniest spaces on Earth - behaves in a completely unexpected way. Instead of boiling at lower temperatures, researchers have shown that water in these tubes can actually freeze solid at temperatures well above boiling point.

"The effect is much greater than anyone had anticipated," said lead researcher Michael Strano from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). It was then gradually flooded by rising sea levels around 6,500–6,200 BCE. Geological surveys have suggested that it stretched from Britain’s east coast to the Netherlands and the western coasts of Germany and the peninsula ofJutland. It was probably a rich habitat with human habitation in the Mesolithic period, although rising sea levels gradually reduced it to low-lying islands before its final destruction, perhaps following a tsunami caused by the Storegga Slide. Pear-Shaped Nuclei Explain Lack Of Antimatter And Make Time-Travel Impossible. In physics sometimes proving the obvious is more complex than proving the difficult. The obvious, in this case, is why the universe is made of matter. From your loud neighbor to the furthest galaxy everything is made of matter, but the laws of physics are symmetrical so there should be just as much anti-matter.

So why isn't there? We haven’t got a full picture yet, but an international group of physicists might have found a very important clue. They discovered that some atomic nuclei aren’t symmetric, but are actually pear-shaped. Elon Musk Says We’re Probably Living In A Computer Simulation – Here’s The Science. In a recent interview at the Code Conference in California, technology entrepreneur Elon Musk suggested we are living inside a computer simulation. On first hearing, this claim seems far-fetched. But could there be some substance to Musk’s thinking? As founder of a number of high-profile companies, such as Tesla and Space X, Musk’s business interests lie firmly in leading technologies.

Key to his claim is that computer games have evolved rapidly over the past 40 years to the point that, inside the next few years, they will be fully immersive, with a computer-generated and controlled world seamlessly merged with the physical world. In other words, we are on the verge of experiencing augmented reality (AR) combined with artificial intelligence. Cosmic Explosion Among the Brightest in Recorded History. Cosmic Explosion Among the Brightest in Recorded History Scientists have detected a flash of light from across the Galaxy so powerful that it bounced off the Moon and lit up the Earth's upper atmosphere. The flash was brighter than anything ever detected from beyond our Solar System and lasted over a tenth of a second.

NASA and European satellites and many radio telescopes detected the flash and its aftermath on December 27, 2004. Two science teams report about this event at a special press event today at NASA headquarters. There's A Second Layer Of Information In DNA. The way A, T, G, and C are arranged in the DNA double helix determines how proteins are produced in the body of multi-celled organisms like us. And now, physicists have confirmed that there’s a second layer of information in DNA.

In addition to the genetic information, we’re also determined by the mechanical properties of DNA. The findings are published in PLOS ONE this week. Those same four letters are found in all our different cells within all our different organs. Since the 1980s, researchers have proposed that a second layer of information sits atop the genetic code: mechanical cues that determine how the information is folded.

According to that theory, this folding is determined by mechanical information written into DNA molecules. Two layers of information also means that genetic mutations would have two effects: The letter sequence that codes for specific proteins can change, or the way DNA is folded can change. The crucibles that bore out early building blocks of life may have been, in many cases, modest puddles. Now, researchers working with that hypothesis have achieved a significant advancement toward understanding an evolutionary mystery—how components of RNA and DNA formed from chemicals present on early Earth before life existed.
