Differentiated instruction is a new fad in education and rightfully so as it means customized instruction for every student. Let’s say you’re a new second grade teacher. You have twenty students in your class and one of your main objectives is to teach all of them to read by the end of the year. Five students enter your classroom on the first day of school, already knowing how to read. Ten students are familiar with reading from being read to or watching educational programming and within a few months, they’ll learn how to read. What’s a teacher, with only one classroom aide and one to two hours of reading instruction a day, to do?
