UBS On The Importance Of 3D Printing Over a year ago we discussed the "next Industrial Revolution" and where it might appear from. 3D printers were envisioned among Goldman's top disruptive themes earlier this year and as UBS notes, 3D printing – or additive manufacturing – has been catching investors’ imaginations in recent months. Some commentators have suggested the technology has the potential to literally transform the world economy and dismantle global supply chains; while UBS points out that, others have suggested the technology is hyped and has little promise beyond a few niche product areas in manufacturing. The truth, Andrew Cates believes, probably lies somewhere in between but he is nevertheless more sympathetic to those who champion the technology’s disruptive – even revolutionary - qualities. How to Use Periscope for Education Periscope, Twitter's live video streaming app, is taking the education world by storm. Since its debut in early 2015, teachers and administrators are trying to figure out how to use Periscope for education and not just as a way for students to stream silly human tricks on live video to their friends. Before we can get into how to use Periscope for education, let's first define what exactly Periscope is and how you use it for those of you that are clueless for now. Thanks to countless wars, the irresistible draw of modernization, and overwrought tourism infrastructure, the Europe of your dreams is harder to find than ever. However, there are still towns where you can experience that ‘old-world European charm’ almost like it was when Wordsworth and the Romantics first popularized vagabonding the Continent. These are places with well-preserved architecture dating back hundreds and even thousands of years. These are places where the negative impact of tourism isn’t allowed to run roughshod over local aesthetics.

Recreating Size and Measurments From Images You find yourself browsing the internet and looking at all the cool things other people have made, things for sale but you want to make improvements in, or you just want to try you hand at building it yourself. You go to their website and look closely at their images and find lots of descriptions about what it is and how they use it but nothing about how it was made, and no patterns. So you start thinking, "I want to make one like that but I would really like a plan or some measurements to start from." There are some amazingly smart people who can take a look at something and will just build it hit or miss on the sizes and everything just works out.

I’ve recently been putting my Ultimaker² through its paces, and one of the pieces that I wanted to try printing was Dizingof’s Joint Stars. It’s a lovely piece of interlocked geometry, but hard to print on an extrusion-based 3D printer due to the large overhanging limbs that start in mid-air. Another was TheRat’s Dragon – which also had some significant overhangs, as well as large thin wings which seemed unlikely to withstand the rigors of repeated passes to build up the height without some extra anchor points to minimize flexing. The generic overhang-angle-based blanket support the Cura and other slicers offer seemed like a poor choice, and one that was likely to result in such extensive coverage that the finished surfaces would be quite badly damaged. Autodesk acquired the Meshmixer package back in the fall of 2011, and after a couple of years, the 2.0 release has finally seen the light of day with some significant new features and an upgraded user interface.
