The Awl - Be Less Stupid Thank you for stopping in at The Awl, a New York City-based web concern established in early 2009. The Awl intends to encourage a daily discussion of the issues of the day—news, politics, culture (and TV!)—during sensible hours of the working week. We believe that there is a great big Internet out there on which we all live, and that too often the curios and oddities of that Internet are ignored in favor of the most obvious and easy stories. We believe that there is an audience of intelligent readers who are poorly served by being delivered those same stories in numbing repetition to the detriment of their reading diet.
Harvard Seeks to Jolt University Teaching - Teaching By Dan Berrett Cambridge, Mass. A growing body of evidence from the classroom, coupled with emerging research in cognitive psychology and neuroscience, is lending insight into how people learn, but teaching on most college campuses has not changed much, several speakers said here at Harvard University at a daylong conference dedicated to teaching and learning. Too often, faculty members teach according to habits and hunches, said Carl E. Wieman, a Nobel Prize-winning physicist and associate director of the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy, who has extensively studied how to improve science education. NOWNESS Identical twins Valeria Napoleone and Stefania Pramma pair up for a vibrantly off-kilter portrait series by cult Swiss photographer Walter Pfeiffer. Styled by Fantastic Man’s Jodie Barnes, the fashionable siblings wore complimentary Alaïa, Margiela and Céline accessorized with Chanel, Fabergé and designs from their own line of jewelry, “SvP”. The willowy Italian sisters are a fixture on the international art circuit, where they can be found lighting up a room in colorful, matching Issey Miyake and Prada outfits. London-based Napoleone is a respected collector and patron of female artists—the works of Jill Spector, Nicola Pisano and Rebecca Morris fill her living room—while Pramma is an independent luxury accessories designer and consultant in New York. Growing up close to Milan, their mother would take them to the family's jeweler to have individual pieces made to mark special occasions.
In Which These Are The 100 Greatest Writers Of All Time The 100 Greatest Writers of All Time by WILL HUBBARD and ALEX CARNEVALE Other lists of this kind have been attempted, none very successfully. We would like to stress that there is a crucial difference between "an important writer" and "a great writer"; the latter is at this time our sole interest. We will account for some of the names that did not make this list in a later dispatch. There is nothing bad to say about anyone we list here, except in some cases that they were anti-Semitic or racist, hated women or hated men.
