Book NRICH Bespoke PDBook Forthcoming EventsBook our Hands-on Roadshow How can we meet the needs of all pupils without differentiation of lesson content? How can we record progress without levels? Thoughts on topical issues of mathematics education from the NCETM’s Director, Charlie Stripp I believe that if we are to adopt a teaching for mastery approach to maths teaching, consistent with the new National Curriculum, we must answer these questions. Many primary teachers have asked my NCETM colleagues and me these questions, and this blog explains our current thinking.

The Standards Unit including software The Standards Unit are a collection of resources produced in response to the Smith Report by the Department for Education and Skills. They use ‘active learning’ strategies that were originally planned for use post-16 but have now been introduced into the secondary sector. The well known Dr Malcom Swann of Nottingham University played a big role in the development of the resources that span the whole secondary maths curriculum. I personally use these resources a lot and consider them to promote high levels of mathematical thought and making connections between topics. In addition to the paper-based resources, the Standards Unit also features software applets. I have added as many of these that I can find to the list below, but there are more out there.

How DO We Learn Math? What makes it possible to learn advanced math fairly quickly is that the human brain is capable of learning to follow a given set of rules without understanding them, and apply them in an intelligent and useful fashion. Given sufficient practice, the brain eventually discovers (or creates) meaning in what began as a meaningless game.— Keith DevlinShould Children Learn Math by Starting with Counting? It seems obvious that our children must have a wide range of experience with real world objects before counting, addition, or subtraction mean anything to them. But are other topics, such as calculus, better learned as abstract rules — as a game that we play with symbols? And what about the topics in the middle?
