Fertile earth left behind after the yearly Nile flood provided the basis for Egypt’s agricultural prosperity, a key factor in the longevity of the civilisation. Impressive monuments were erected in the name of kings, from monumental temples for the gods to the pyramids marking the burials of rulers. The British Museum collection includes statuary and decorated architecture from throughout pharaonic history, often inscribed with hieroglyphs. Donnely Loeb collection

This list was initially a subset of my G'Oogle list, which itself had grown out of a post I originally made at textkit. Anyway, this is hoped to be a more-convenient way for us to track all of the freely-available LCL books out there. I have sorted these by Loeb catalog number, so that it will be easier for everyone to know what we have found and what is still missing (but hopefully out there for free, at least those that have passed into the public domain). As always, feel free to email errors or additions, or feel free to post about them at textkit.

Thanks: Many of you have emailed me additional links or posted them to textkit. Society for the Study of Egyptian Antiquities - Montreal Chapter. Passons-y un moment! Let's tarry here for a while! What it Is Ancient Egypt has fascinated the public ever since ancient times, particularly since it was rediscovered by the west just over 200 years ago.

Canadians shared this fascination from an early date, bringing back remains of that ancient culture beginning in the 19th century. Today, Egyptian artefacts are no longer allowed to leave their country of origin. Since its launch in September 2006, In Search of Ancient Egypt in Canada has been identifying and describing Egyptian artefacts in museums across Canada. Virtual tours. Sir Hans Sloane, founder of the British Museum Though principally a museum of cultural art objects and antiquities today, the British Museum was founded as a "universal museum". Its foundations lie in the will of the physician and naturalist Sir Hans Sloane (1660-1753). During the course of his lifetime Sloane gathered an enviable collection of curiosities and whilst not wishing to see his collection broken up after death, he bequeathed it to King George II, for the nation, for the princely sum of £20,000.

At that time, Sloane's collection consisted of around 71,000 objects of all kinds including some 40,000 printed books, 7,000 manuscripts, extensive natural history specimens including 337 volumes of dried plants, prints and drawings including those by Albrecht Dürer and antiquities from Egypt, Greece, Rome, the Ancient Near and Far East and the Americas With the acquisition of Montagu House the first exhibition galleries and reading room for scholars opened on 15 January 1759. The third part of the permanent exhibition focuses on some of the ancient Egypt antiquities, that can be seen as the most important source of knowledge about this culture: The belief in an afterlife.

Organized into the areas “Man” and “Animal”, the exhibition picks up the two most important forms of burial, because in Egyptian belief the eternal accommodation of animals, which represent various Gods, is as important as that of men.
