Over a period of ten years in publication, 8 magazine took the traditional format of words and pictures to a new level. For each issue, we chose a theme to explore, usually a contemporary issue that requires investigating and understanding, and seek the best ways to bring the subject to light. With its unique mix of reportage, commentary, interviews and essays, 8 magazine grew to occupy a unique place in the publishing sphere, offering world class analysis through essays, photographic and written. In the Oil issue, we wanted to look at the environmental devastation caused by oil, the wealth it creates, even the architecture it shapes. It’s a good question and the answer comes from German photographer Martin Klimas. He starts by putting different colored paint on top of a speaker over some translucent material, then cranks up the volume. I was born in South Carolina and have since lived in Germany, Texas, North Carolina, Nebraska, South Korea, Hawaii, Colorado, Florida, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, and Virginia. Some of my favorite things about Richmond are the community of artists that I've shared a studio with (Ally Hodges, Josh George, Sterling Hundley, Aaron Riley, Edward Kinsella, Andrew R. The bee suit fell well short of the record 135 lbs claimed by India's Vipin Seth, according to Guinness. Ping claims he was stung about 20 times during the 40-minute stunt.
