Ian Ruhter: Old Technique, New Style

And before there was film, there was the collodion wet plate process. The wet plate process was introduced in the 1850s. It is a complex hands-on craft, involving silver nitrate and other hazardous chemicals. In addition, wet plates require tremendous amounts of lights. Hence, there are still a number of enthusiasts out there, making and developing their very own wet plates. “I had been working with the wet plates process for a while when I discovered the work of Eadweard Muybridge,” says Ian. How did Muybridge do that? “The exposure time of wet plates is really, really long, but Muybridge managed to cut it down by mixing the chemicals and using a lot of white, reflective material. Ian’s theory was that if he had enough strobes with enough power, he would be able to reduce the wet plate exposure time to a fraction of a second. “No one had ever used artificial lights and wet plates to freeze motion,” says Ian.

Valerie Belin exhibition. When Valerie Belin first showed her extraordinary monochromatic mannequin portraits at the Michael Hoppen gallery in 2003, we were hooked on the Parisian artist's work.

Valerie Belin exhibition

This year she’s gone a step further and breathed life into her subject matter by using models, and shooting in colour, and the effect is every bit as captivating. With six male and six female models chosen from the new faces divisions of various Parisian model agencies, the portraits look bizarrely inhuman, compared with the uncannily lifelike mannequin shots from her previous exhibition. Though in colour, the flat tonality, powdered texture and complete absence of shadow and light, makes the models seem like avatars in a virtual reality world. This effect is heightened by a lack of background, giving the impression that the models are floating in an otherworldly two-dimensional space.

Using a process that could be the new definition of meticulous, Korean sculptor Seung Mo Park creates giant ephemeral portraits by cutting layer after layer of wire mesh.

Ephemeral Portraits Cut from Layers of Wire Mesh by Seung Mo Park

Each work begins with a photograph which is superimposed over layers of wire with a projector, then using a subtractive technique Park slowly snips away areas of mesh. Each piece is several inches thick as each plane that forms the final image is spaced a few finger widths apart, giving the portraits a certain depth and dimensionality that’s hard to convey in a photograph, but this video on YouTube shows it pretty well.

Park just exhibited this month at Blank Space Gallery in New York as part of his latest series Maya (meaning “illusion” in Sanskrit). You can see much more at West Collects. Park uses a process to overlay or weave together film strips, however this appears to be a single print, so I’m unsure of how he’s making these. My assumption is that it’s not digital, but I could be wrong. Anybody venture a guess of how these are made? BACK TO THE FUTURE : Irina Werning - Photographer

I admit being a nosey photographer. As soon as I step into someone else’s house, I start sniffing for them. Most of us are fascinated by their retro look but to me, it’s imagining how people would feel and look like if they were to reenact them today… Two years ago, I decided to actually do this. In America, the chasm between rich and poor is growing, the clash between conservatives and liberals is strengthening, and even good and evil seem more polarized than ever before.

Created Equal... Photographer Mark Laita

At the heart of this collection of portraits is my desire to remind us that we were all equal, until our environment, circumstances or fate molded and weathered us into whom we have become. Los Angeles- and New York-based photographer Mark Laita completed Created Equal over the course of eight years; his poignant words reflect the striking polarizations found in his photographs.

Presented as diptychs, the images explore social, economic and gender difference and similarity within the United States, emulating and updating the portraiture of Edward Curtis, August Sander and Richard Avedon. This volume includes an introduction by noted culture writer and editorial cult figure Ingrid Sischy.
