Free Mathematics Books

Here is an alphabetical list of online mathematics books, textbooks, monographs, lecture notes, and other mathematics related documents freely available on the web. I tried to select only the works in book formats, "real" books that are mainly in PDF format, so many well-known html-based mathematics web pages and online tutorials are left out. Cluster Analysis

R has an amazing variety of functions for cluster analysis . In this section, I will describe three of the many approaches: hierarchical agglomerative, partitioning, and model based. While there are no best solutions for the problem of determining the number of clusters to extract, several approaches are given below.

Mathematics

http://www.ibiblio.org/expo/vatican.exhibit/exhibit/d-mathematics/Mathematics.html Ancient Science and Its Modern Fates Until recently, historians of the Scientific Revolution of the 16th and 17th centuries treated it as a kind of rebellion against the authority of ancient books and humanist scholarship. In fact, however, it began with the revival of several tremendously important and formidably difficult works of Greek science. The mathematics and astronomy of the Greeks had been known in medieval western Europe only through often imperfect translations, some of them made from Arabic intermediary texts rather than the Greek originals. The papal curia became a center for the recovery of the original Greek manuscripts, often very old and remarkably elegant, and the production of new translations of these works.

The Computer-Based Math Education Summit

The Computer-Based Math™ Education Summit brought together an unprecedented cross section of leaders with a stake in math—from industry, technology, government, and education—to answer the question, "In an era of ubiquitous computing, how should we rebuild math education from the ground up, to keep pace with and drive progress in the real world?" Videos from the summit This conference was organized by computerbasedmath.org , a project to build a completely new math curriculum with computer-based computation at its heart—alongside a campaign to refocus math education away from historical hand-calculating techniques and toward relevant and conceptually interesting topics.

Mathematical Background

This web page is a revised and extended version of Appendix A from the book Conceptual Structures by John F. Sowa. It presents a brief summary of the following topics for students and general readers of that book and related books such as Knowledge Representation and books on logic, linguistics, and computer science. Note: Special symbols in this file that are outside the Latin-1 character set (ISO 8859-1) are represented by a .gif image for each character. The alt tag for each image gives the name of the character. Students who are just learning the symbols can move the mouse to any symbol to get a brief reminder of its name.
