11 Incredible Living Walls. The idea of a living wall conjures up all sorts of images, but in reality it is nothing more than a wall completely covered in vegetation.

11 Incredible Living Walls

In order to create a living wall pre-vegetated or fabric panels containing plastic containers, or geotextiles, as well as irrigation systems and vegetation are attached to the wall or supporting structure. This form of urban gardening is often designed as an art form to decorate buildings in cities and has been hailed as one way to make cities more enjoyable, healthier and ultimately greener places. 1. Sunshine heats the air beneath a very wide greenhouse-like roofed collector structure surrounding the central base of a very tall chimney tower. The resulting convection causes a hot air updraft in the tower by the chimney effect. This airflow drives wind turbines placed in the chimney updraft or around the chimney base to produce electricity.

Bhutan To Be First Country to Go 100% Organic. If there was ever a nation that could see the purpose behind organic, sustainable farming, it would be a nation that is composed mostly of farmers.

Bhutan To Be First Country to Go 100% Organic

Such a place does exist, and it soon may be the first nation to go 100% organic, paving the way for others to do the same on a global scale. The Himalayan kingdom of Bhutan is known for a high level of citizen happiness, but it is doing something even more noteworthy in the near future. With Prime Minister Jigmi Thinley making a major announcement regarding the organic farming project at the Rio+20 Conference on Sustainable Development which took place last month, the move has made national headlines.

News - Exploring Sustainability for Energy and Buildings- All Images. A research team based at the University of Pittsburgh and Carnegie Mellon University have selected a spectrum of buildings to serve as case studies--new and existing, minimal to robust technology and monitoring, and commercial and residential buildings--with which to develop a culture of evidence and framework for the dynamic life cycle assessment. While they do have a net-zero energy building as a case study, the researchers are particularly interested in existing structures with limited building automation systems.

While new green buildings receive attention from the media, designers, and researchers, they represent a small fraction of the existing building stock, which is currently estimated at 4.5 million commercial properties. Given the large number of existing buildings, they represent a greater opportunity to reduce carbon emissions and energy usage. Credit: University of Pittsburgh.

EQUITY GREEN: Water Cube Fuses Energy Efficiency With Bubble Architecture

You got it! Get ready for this little beauty. Beijing is building an aquatic center for the 2008 Olympic Games...with the outside facade being a little bubbly. This is pretty crazy! Designed by PTW Architects in Australia, it was the engineers who took off with the idea of bubbles and made it a reality. Once they figured out how the steel frames and connectors were to be used in forming the bubble structure, two layers of plastic film called ETFE (Ethylene TetraFluoroEthylene) were used to fill in the spaces between the steel frames.
