Just over a week ago, Donald Trump gathered members of the world’s press before him and told them they were liars. “The press, honestly, is out of control,” he said. “The public doesn’t believe you any more.” CNN was described as “very fake news… story after story is bad”. The BBC was “another beauty”. That night I did two things. Trump had spoken, and his audience had heard him. I click Google’s first suggested link. Soft Targets On April 12, 1982, Yuri Andropov, the chairman of the K.G.B., ordered foreign-intelligence operatives to carry out “active measures”—aktivniye meropriyatiya—against the reëlection campaign of President Ronald Reagan. Unlike classic espionage, which involves the collection of foreign secrets, active measures aim at influencing events—at undermining a rival power with forgeries, front groups, and countless other techniques honed during the Cold War.

The Soviet leadership considered Reagan an implacable militarist. According to extensive notes made by Vasili Mitrokhin, a high-ranking K.G.B. officer and archivist who later defected to Great Britain, Soviet intelligence tried to infiltrate the headquarters of the Republican and Democratic National Committees, popularize the slogan “Reagan Means War! Active measures were used by both sides throughout the Cold War. Terrible! Just found out that Obama had my "wires tapped" in Trump Tower just before the victory. Nothing found. This is McCarthyism! Is it legal for a sitting President to be "wire tapping" a race for president prior to an election? Turned down by court earlier. A NEW LOW! I'd bet a good lawyer could make a great case out of the fact that President Obama was tapping my phones in October, just prior to Election! How low has President Obama gone to tapp my phones during the very sacred election process. This is Nixon/Watergate. Bad (or sick) guy!

Inside Trump’s fury: The president rages at leaks, setbacks and accusations. Such a bizarre passage, especially when you factor in that someone in the inner circle leaked it. WH spokeswoman: Trump doesn't accept Comey's denial of wiretapping claims. Trump's Wiretap Tweets Raise Risk of Impeachment - Bloomberg View. That’s not your ordinary exercise of free speech. If the accusation were true, and President Barack Obama ordered a warrantless wiretap of Donald Trump during the campaign, the scandal would be of Watergate-level proportions. But if the allegation is not true and is unsupported by evidence, that too should be a scandal on a major scale. This is the kind of accusation that, taken as part of a broader course of conduct, could get the current president impeached. We shouldn’t care that the allegation was made early on a Saturday morning on Twitter. How low has President Obama gone to tapp my phones during the very sacred election process. The basic premise of the First Amendment is that truth should defeat her opposite number. But this rather optimistic adage only accounts for speech and debate between citizens. The government’s special responsibility has two bases. A President’s Credibility - WSJ. ‘People Just Flat-Out Lie’ President Donald Trump called her “Hillary Clinton’s P.R. person” when she got a scoop he didn’t like last week.

Controversial Fox News host Bill O’Reilly called her “unruly” when she shouted questions at Secretary of State Rex Tillerson. Story Continued Below Well, it turns out Andrea Mitchell, NBC News chief foreign affairs correspondent and host of MSNBC's "Andrea Mitchell Reports,” has some words for them, too. In a new interview for The Global Politico, our weekly podcast on world affairs in the Trump era, Mitchell says that after covering every president since Jimmy Carter, Trump is by far the most hostile to the press—and to the truth—she’s ever seen, with a White House staff using the briefing room as a daily disinformation machine and a president and secretary of state outright undermining the ability of reporters to do their job. “It is totally sui generis. Oh, and another thing she’d like to get straight: She’s not, she insists, some pro-Clinton hack.
