As campaigners on the ground in the Scottish city of Glasgow continued to call out world leaders for delivering empty promises at COP26, hundreds of groups on Tuesday urged attendees of the United Nations climate summit to reject attempts by the hydropower industry to secure support for new projects and instead focus on real solutions to the planetary crisis.
"Instead of damming the rivers that help sustain us, climate funds should be used to restore rivers and promote protecting river ecosystems and communities. " Reiterating concerns raised around the beginning of the conference by U.N. human rights experts, a diverse coalition of 346 organizations from 78 countries issued a joint statement warning that "the hydropower industry is gearing up for a massive greenwashing effort to present its destructive product—which has been shown time and again to destroy ecosystems and communities—as the pathway out of our predicaments. The Penan, in the Malaysian state of Sarawak, have been blockading the Murum dam site since September, demanding better compensation and more land.
The dam will flood the traditional forest homes of Penan and Kenyah tribes. Eight Penan, including a boy of about 13, were arrested at the dam site and taken into police custody. The impoundment (flooding) of the dam has begun, even though the homes in the Penan’s relocation site are not yet finished and the Penan have not been properly consulted about the resettlement process. Approximately 1,400 Penan have been told they must move to make way for the Murum dam, the first of 12 new dams that are planned across the state of Sarawak. " Les Indiens devront être auditionnés par les parlementaires avant que les travaux ne puissent reprendre, selon une source judiciaire qui a précisé que cette décision était susceptible d'appel par le consortium public Norte Energia, en charge des travaux.
