Step Garden at Acros Fukuoka Location: Fukuoka, Japan Background: Adding a new building in Fukuoka, Japan, forced designers to encroach upon one of the last green spaces in the densely populated city. Eco-centric architecture firm Emilio Ambasz & Associates created a unique 5400-square-meter green area that flows into what remains of the park by snaking this 14-story, ziggurat-like garden up the side of the civic center. Why It's Unique: Acros Fukuoka's walls are mostly glass, allowing natural light to flood the building year-round.

Humanity has an obsession with its own destruction. From countless religions, myths, legends and doomsday predictions, humanity has always been curious about what the Earth would be like without us. Based on the Earth’s past, it almost seems inevitable that natural destruction will occur at some point, and man-made methods of destruction exist as well.

3D Paintings on Panes of Glass
Using multiple layers of clear glass, Canada based David Spriggs and Chinese born Xia Xiaowan , transform flat artwork into 3D sculptures. Viewers are treated to different shifting perspectives of the works based on where they stand in the art space. Spriggs work revolves around powerful explosive imagery, often resembling storms, cosmic blasts or firework like explosions. Xiawan’s “spatial paintings,” which often feature distorted figures, are drawn individually using colored pencil on tinted glass. Only when these pieces are combined on their floor racks do the images create the whole hologram like effect. (hack line – couldn’t help it) Artist Jason de Caires Taylor creates life-size cement sculptures of people and submerges them into the waters of South America.

Hendrix portrait with 5000 guitar picks
LEADING UK mosaic artist Ed Chapman has created a unique Jimi Hendrix mosaic out of 5000 guitar plectrums. It was auctioned last month at Cancer Research UK’s Sound & Vision event at the iconic Abbey Road Studios. Ed Chapman said: “I’m delighted to be supporting Cancer Research UK at this year’s Sound & Vision event. The John Lennon piece I created for 2009’s event raised £6,000 for the charity, and I hope the Jimi mosaic can do the same this year.” He was right because it was finally sold for £23,000 !2007 February 5 - Comet Between Fireworks and Lightning
I'm sure you've come across Fred & Friend products before at your local indie store and might not have even known it. Last weekend I was cruising around town and stopped at an indie store only to find one whole corner of the place dedicated to Fred & Friend products. It was heavenly. I stood there for probably more than a half hour laughing and checking out all their cool stuff. A lot of creativity goes into the making of these products, and I think part of that cleverness is shown in the name of the product and the slogan. It's really a hoot flipping through their catalog and I often find myself posing the question: "How in heavens name did they think of that?".
