“For the people outside of San Francisco, show solidarity by using black fax, email bombs, and phone calls to the BART Board of Directors. BART decided to cut off your communications and now we will flood theirs,” the group said in a statement. Anonymous calls the effort #OpBART. The statement includes links to media materials and “email and fax bomb info.” The BART cell phone shutdown occurred on Thursday and took out service from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m.

The hacking is part of a carefully planned effort by Anonymous to bring BART to its knees in retaliation for its shutdown of cell phone service Thursday night at some of its stations to disrupt planned demonstrations over a police shooting. A notice on BART’s website says the following: BART’s online services including web, mobile web, email and SMS are used by nearly 2 million customers every month. Anonymous has posted a list of all the names and addresses on a miscellaneous website (we won’t currently be linking to) and also included the following message (click for large version) Anonymous issued a press release on Saturday claiming it would: It also released the following video propaganda video in aid of the attack:

Strategic Security Survey: Global Threat, Local Pain (click image for larger view and for full slideshow) One of the San Francisco Bay Area's transportation systems is bracing itself for more hack attacks Monday after a data breach by Anonymous over the weekend that affected thousands of Bay Area residents. The hactivist group infiltrated a Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) website called MyBart.org and stole personal identification data on thousands of users, which it posted online.

Anonymous notified people of the hack on one of the Twitter feeds it uses, @Anonymous IRC. On Sunday BART officials warned users that the organization's online services--used by nearly 2 million customers a month--may be subject to a disruption of service due to another attack, although BART was doing everything it could to defend its website and keep services up and running. San Franciso, USA. 15/08/2011 BART cut off cell phone service to prevent a protest over police brutality on August 11th at the Civic Center station. What was supposed to be a surprise protest leaked out and large numbers of police were deployed. Even without shutting down cell phone service, the protest probably wouldn't have happened. But that tactic received international attention. They also put out a call for a protest at 5 pm on August 15th at the Civic Center BART station. They marched down Market stopping at other BART stations which were closed. Throughout the protest people from Egypt and around the world monitored the #OpBART hashtag. Some protesters were able to lift up a BART gate and some went under it as it was held up and BART police stood on the other side.
