Thinking in Systems by Donella H. Meadows. Why systems thinking isn't a fad - Systems thinking. I am often challenged that systems thinking is just another workplace fad.
I thought I’d share my systems thinking journey, how it has benefitted me and my work and how it makes a lasting difference. I first came across systems thinking when my line manager handed me a copy of Peter Senge’s book, The Fifth Discipline. I wanted to understand how best to transform organisations and keep focussed on the outcomes we wanted. Alongside the book, which I found really inspiring, I was lucky enough to be surrounded by experienced Operational Researchers in my team who were very used to applying the principles.
Complexity Explorables. This explorable features an agent based model for road traffic and congestion.
The model captures a phenomenon that most of us have witnessed on highways: phantom traffic jams, also known as traffic shocks or ghost jams. These are spontaneously emergent congested segments that move slowly and oppositely to the traffic. The explorable illustrates that phantom jams are more likely to occur if the variability in car speeds is higher: So, if say 90% of the cars try moving at 120 km/h and 10 percent at 150 km/h, everyone might end up going 80 km/h on average.
Whereas if everyone travelled at about 120 km/h no reduction of collective traffic flow occurs. Press Play and keep on reading.... [Video] How to Innovate (As seen in Fast Company) How to innovate?
It’s what keeps any CEO or founder worth their stock options awake at night. After all, innovation. It’s not a four-letter word. Crap is a four-letter word. Linking Theory + Practice. OrgPhysics: Value Creation and the Three Leadership Structures Since the 1920s at least, when organizational theorist Mary Parker Follett famously complained about the loftiness of the entire concept of leadership, the world of business and academics writers have not been able to agree on either the parameters or the components of leadership.
Linking a robust theory of leadership into organizational design appears to be even more elusive. A concept of leadership that would satisfy theorists as well as practitioners has so far appeared utterly impossible. Instead, the concept of leadership has become even more clouded over time and has turned into a catch-all label, now attached to an indefinite number of facets of organization life. OrgPhysics is an explanation of leadership, power and the reality of three separate but parallel organizational structures: formal, informal and value creating. The Three-Faceted Nature of Organizations.

And that spontaneously promotes the emergence of “green waves,” which are platoons of cars that roll through intersection after intersection without stopping.
You are not programming “there will be a green wave and it will slow at this speed” into the system. The traffic kind of triggers the green waves themselves. And it’s all self-organized because there’s no direct communication between the traffic lights in different intersections. Purpose-driven innovation in a time of COVID-19. Linking Theory + Practice. The most heard reaction is, “Huh, that sounds complicated!” – and the attention is gone. So let’s start from a different angle. Let’s focus on the world of living beings – that is, on the world. Take a rainforest, a fish swarm or an ant state; a megacity that works as by a wonder; the weather & climate or the human brain. Embracing VUCA in business – Welcome to Caterfly.
