The war had started over issues of tariffs and the taking of American sailors on the high seas; by the summer of 1814, British fighters were in middle of a campaign burning and looting along the coast. Unfortunately, there was no recorded sound from that time, so for help in our storytelling we imagined how NPR might have covered the burning of Washington, D.C., had we been on the scene two centuries ago. Well into the 21st century, it is clear that the concept of modern teacher librarian practice is not clear.

What I know for sure is that if the Joyce who graduated from library school in 1976 (and again with a school specialty in 1988), heck, if the Joyce from the 2007/2008 school year, were to visit my library today, she would be stunned by the differences in my/our practice. Specifically, it was a Times article that discussed computer programs and other techniques designed to root out plagiarism.[ 2] The article revealed that there is now software that can look for a lengthy passage, like a string of pearls,[ 3] in a new document that is identical to a passage in a previously published work. When I first read the Times article, I remember thinking, it's a good thing[ 6] and attention must be paid.[ 7] After all, as a writer, I find plagiarism to be a constant concern.
