Genetic markers and population history: Finland revisited. Genealogy Sleuth Search for your Ancestors on the Internet | Pro. A Natural History of the Senses, by Diane Ackerman. Smell Smell is a potent wizard that transports us across thousands of miles and all the years we have lived. The odors of fruits waft me to my southern home, to my childhood frolics in the peach orchard.

Other odors, instantaneous and fleeting, cause my heart to dilate joyously or contract with remembered grief. Even as I think of smells, my nose is full of scents that start awake sweet memories of summers gone and ripening fields far away. -- Helen Keller The Mute Sense Nothing is more memorable than a smell. People of all cultures have always been obsessed with smell, sometimes applying perfumes in Niagaras of extravagance. Our sense of smell can be extraordinarily precise, yet it's almost impossible to describe how something smells to someone who hasn't smelled it. Breaths come in pairs, except at two times in our lives -- the beginning and the end. Try it now. Forward, not permanent, sweet, not lasting, The perfume and suppliance of a minute. Smell is the most direct of all our senses. Fragrant Flashbacks. Memory and smell are intertwined; it’s through memory that we learn to remember smells, and disorders that take away memory also take away the ability to distinguish scents.

Some of this learning starts even before we are born, when fetuses learn about their mother’s preferences through the amniotic fluid. Flavor, like that described by Proust (see sidebar), is what happens when taste and smell come together. Technically, “taste” refers only to the senses that are associated with receptors on the tongue: sweet, sour, bitter, salty, and — some people argue — umami.

“What everybody calls ‘smell’ is when you sniff through your nostrils to get an odorant. Getting back to Proust’s madeleines, Maria Larsson studies how smell evokes autobiographical memories at Stockholm University. Other researchers have found that the formation of autobiographical memory peaks between the ages of 15 and 30. Just finding the smells to test people with was tricky, Larsson says. Mennella, J. Becoming Human – Hour 2 PBS Airdate: November 10, 2009 NARRATOR: Humans: without a doubt, the smartest animal on Earth. Yet we're unmistakably tied to our ape origins. Millions of years ago, we were apes, living ape lives in Africa. So how did we get from that to this? The questions are huge. At the threshold of humanity, one ancestor contains tantalizing secrets. RICHARD WRANGHAM (Harvard University): Homo erectus had a slightly smaller brain, slightly bigger jaw, but it's basically us. NARRATOR: Basically us, almost 2,000,000 years ago. New finds are revealing the truth about the ancestors at the heart of our evolution. JOHN SHEA (Stony Brook University): These creatures were capable of analyzing possible uses of tools and coming up with a technological solution to the problem: how do you kill a big, dangerous animal without getting killed yourself.

NARRATOR: Homo erectus pioneered what it means to be human, colonizing whole continents and creating the first human societies. And David H. Nature. Books. To Kill a Mockingbird - Harper Lee. Just why it should have happened, or why it should have happened just when it did, he could not, of course, possibly have said; nor perhaps could it even have occurred to him to ask. The thing was above all a secret, something to be preciously concealed from Mother and Father; and to that very fact it owed an enormous part of its deliciousness.

It was like a peculiarly beautiful trinket to be carried unmentioned in one’s trouser-pocket-a rare stamp, an old coin, a few tiny gold links found trodden out of shape on the path in the park, a pebble of carnelian, a sea shell distinguishable from all others by an unusual spot or stripe-and, as if it were any one of these, he carried around with him everywhere a warm and persistent and increasingly beautiful sense of possession. Nor was it only a sense of possession-it was also a sense of protection.

It was as if, in some delightful way, his secret gave him a fortress, a wall behind which he could retreat into heavenly seclusion. “Ah! Unknown No Longer: A Database of Virginia Slave Names. “Unknown No Longer: A Virginia Slave Name Database” was launched by the Virginia Historical Society in the fall of 2011. The database contains information about slaves, including records kept by slave owners in Virginia. According to the “Unknown No Longer” website at “This database is the latest step by the VHS to increase access to its varied collections relating to Virginians of African descent. " Thanks to a generous grant from Dominion Resources and the Dominion Foundation, the Virginia Historical Society launched the project in January 2011. The database seeks to lift from the obscurity of unpublished historical records as much biographical detail as remains of the enslaved Virginians named in those documents. In some cases there may only be a name on a list; in others more details survive, including family relationships, occupations, and life dates.

The project certainly is not complete. Free Family History and Genealogy Records — FamilySearch.org. Royal Descents of famous people. By Mark Humphrys. 1995 to date. The "Karlsschrein", the shrine at Aachen Cathedral containing the remains of Charlemagne (born 742 AD). My aim is to get a vast number of famous people in the West onto one family tree, all descending ultimately from Charlemagne.

Photo 2007 from Volker Toensing. Creative Commons. Why a list of Royal Descents? All humanity is interrelated many times over (contrary to what an endless procession of racists and tribalists throughout history have claimed or implied). Since we don't have such records, we have to make do with what is documented. Descent from the English Royal family Showing descents from Western royalty is probably the most convenient way of tying the West together. You will be aware, hopefully, that the English, French and other European royal families are all inter-related, and all descend ultimately from Charlemagne. With so many Irish descendents living outside of Ireland, it is not surprising that Irish research is so popular amongst genealogists. There are plenty of books, though perhaps not enough to satisfy the advanced researcher, on researching Irish records.

However, sometimes having a small compact guide is perfect for quick reference and fast help. Genealogy at a Glance: Irish Genealogy Research, by Brian Mitchell was the first publication in the Genealogy at a Glance series. This issue covers a background to Irish immigration along with vital records sources and census returns. According to this guide, a major contribution to Irish immigration came during the 1820s with most emigrants leaving from three major provinces; Connaught, Munster, and Leinster. Most of the emigrants were Roman Catholic and under the age of 25. Like many of the guides, this one begins with some quick facts relevant to the subject. No matter what you hope to accomplish through genealogical research, traditional methods may never find all the connections between the various Kelly and variant family groups. Furthermore, links that are believed to have been proven may, in fact, be inaccurate. The ability to study DNA now provides a way to determine direct male-to-male lineage. Such an effort is the basis of this project. This study is meant to include participants from all over the world, including those with the following variant surnames: With researchers from different countries and any of the variant surnames, we'll build a knowledge base that will yield results for years to come.

If your Kelly research has hit a brick wall - and even if it hasn't - DNA analysis could be the breakthrough you've been looking for. So how can a DNA study help you? Table of Contents Part 1: Introduction Passport applications can be an excellent source of genealogical information, especially about foreign-born individuals. The National Archives and Records Administration (NARA) has passport applications from Oct. 1795-Mar. 1925; the U.S. Department of State has passport applications from Apr. 1925 to the present. The Department of State has issued passports to American citizens traveling abroad since 1789, but did not have sole authority to do so until August 23, 1856, when Congress passed an act (11 Stat. 60) prohibiting other governmental entities, such as state and judicial authorities, from issuing passports. Foreign travel in the nineteenth century was much more frequent than one might expect. Although 95 percent of mid-19th century passport applicants were men, many women also traveled overseas.

Your Genetic Genealogist: My Full Mitochondrial Sequence, Heteroplasmy and Comparing mtDNA designations at FTDNA and 23andMe. I received my Full Mitochondrial Sequence (FMS) results from FTDNA last week. FTDNA lists my mtDNA haplogroup as U5b1, while 23andMe reports it as U5b1b2. I am fortunate in that I have four exact matches in the FTDNA database, including a close relative of Dave Dowell of Dr D Digs Up Ancestors. Often mtDNA testing is not especially meaningful genealogically, but in my case it is more so because this subclade does seem to be predominantly Finnish, which matches my paper trail perfectly. My matrilineal great grandmother Mathilda Huhtala (1878-1950) immigrated to the United States from the South Ostrobothnia area of Finland in 1902.

Thanks to my wonderful Finnish friends, including one of my early high resolution mtDNA matches, I have a pretty solid paper trail back to Margaretta Mattsdotter Kauppi Storstraka Taipale born 21 July 1712 in Härmä, Lansi-Suomen Laani, Finland. Article see page 629 Population admixture initially occurred ≈200 years ago because of the African Diaspora.3,4 Since this event, an average of 7 to 10 generations has passed which means that there has been minimal recombination between chromosomes of African and European ancestry.
