Early 20th Century Arctic Warming

Arctic Ocean Warming Began Already In Early 20th Century, Meaning Natural Factors Strongly At Play, Not CO2. In a recent paper, scientists expressed their surprise that the Arctic had started warming already back in the early 20th century, 100 years ago. This, along with the obligatory CO2 climate warming lip service, is described in a Cambridge University press release. An international group of researchers reconstructed the recent history of ocean warming at the gateway to the Arctic Ocean in a region called the Fram Strait, between Greenland and Svalbard, and found that the Arctic Ocean has been warming for much longer than earlier records have suggested.

Annual Arctic Meltdown Scare. By Paul Homewood Every year alarmist scientists claim the Arctic is melting down, but it never actually happens: GENEVA — The United Nations weather agency says this summer will go down for leaving a “deep wound” in the cryosphere — the planet’s frozen parts — amid a heat wave in the Arctic, shrinking sea ice and the collapse of a leading Canadian ice shelf. The World Meteorological Organization said Tuesday that temperatures in the Arctic are rising twice as fast as the global average, provoking what spokeswoman Clare Nullis called a “vicious circle.”

“The rapid decline of sea ice in turn contributes to more warming, and so the circle goes on and the consequences do not stay in the Arctic,” Nullis said during a regular U.N. briefing in Geneva. The weather agency said in a statement that many new temperature records have been set in recent months, including in the Russian town of Verkhoyansk. “What we saw in Siberia this year was exceptionally bad, was exceptionally severe,” Nullis said. By Dr. Sebastian Lüning and Prof. Fritz Vahrenholt [German text translated/edited by P Gosselin] Climate alarm at the World Meteorological Organisation (WMO) was reported on 21 March 2017 at the German online derwesten.de: Heat waves in the Arctic – climate scientists sound the alarm […] During the winter in the Arctic temperatures reached near the melting point. Do we really find ourselves on the verge of disaster? Let’s look at the HadCRUT4 temperatures in Arctic (Fig. 1). Fig. 1: Arctic temperature since 1957. Now let’s extend the time scale and look back 100 years. Fig. 2: Arctic temperature since 1920. The earlier Arctic heat years are impressive when we look at the temperature plot of the island city of Akureyri (Fig. 3): Fig. 3: Temperature plot of the Arctic location of Akureyri since 1880. Now what could have caused it to warm up in the 1930s and 1940s? Figure 4: AMO The curves at Wikipedia or elsewhere are perhaps more colorful, but they often don’t include the last years.

1940 : Arctic Rapidly Melting – How Does NASA Respond? One third of Arctic sea ice disappeared between 1890 and 1940, when CO2 levels were below 310 PPM. 13 Oct 1940, Page 76 – Hartford Courant at Newspapers.com Glaciers in Greenland and Norway were melting rapidly and facing “catastrophic collapse.” 17 Dec 1939, Page 15 – Harrisburg Sunday Courier at Newspapers.com The facts wreck global warming theory, so NASA quite predictably responded by erasing the 1940’s Arctic warmth. In 1922, the Arctic was hot, glaciers were disappearing and sea ice never formed around Spitzbergen. Earlier Arctic warmth unexplained: In Franz Josef Land it was several degrees warmer in early 1930s than today By Die kalte Sonne (German text translated/edited by P Gosselin) In January 2019, a paper by Andrzej Araźny et al appeared in the journal Theoretical and Applied Climatology, in which the researchers evaluated the weather data from four scientific expeditions to the Arctic Franz Josef Land.

Chart Source: A comparison of bioclimatic conditions on Franz Josef Land (the Arctic) between the turn of the nineteenth to twentieth century and present day. The Araźny team also came across an unusual heat that was registered during a trip in 1930/31 when it was 4.6 °C warmer than the modern average in 1981-2010. The authors explain that there have been two phases of warmth in the Arctic in the last 140 years. The first spanned from 1920-1938 and the second began in the 1980s or 90s.
