Which Skills Should You Master? There’s enough time in life to become mediocre at a lot of things. But there isn’t enough time to get really good at more than a couple. Most people don’t even get really good at one. How do you figure out which skills are worth mastering? It’s a difficult question, and one I’ve often struggled with. But I’ve found a handy rule of thumb which can help make the decision clearer: which skill, if you were truly exceptional only at that one, would still be enough to have an interesting and successful career? Say you wanted to be a writer. There’s plenty of skills that could help you be successful: deep expertise in a subject, perfect grammar or marketing skills. Or consider being an entrepreneur. What is Your One Skill? Actually, I lied earlier. With economic specialization, nearly any useful skill will become the core skill of at least some jobs. The difficulty arises because although specialization exists, it’s never perfect.

A growing body of research suggests that paying attention to the body clock, and its effects on energy and alertness, can help pinpoint the different times of day when most of us perform our best at specific tasks, from resolving conflicts to thinking creatively. Most people organize their time around everything but the body's natural rhythms. Workday demands, commuting, social events and kids' schedules frequently dominate—inevitably clashing with the body's circadian rhythms of waking and sleeping. As difficult as it may be to align schedules with the body clock, it may be worth it to try, because of significant potential health benefits.

When it comes to doing cognitive work, for example, most adults perform best in the late morning, says Dr. The ability to focus and concentrate typically starts to slide soon thereafter. Podcast: Play in new window | Download What makes Barb’s latest book so interesting is how it fits in with her previous books. While this book heavily explores the individual’s power to determine what their brains become, previous books like Evil Genes and Pathological Altruism explore the parts of human nature that are hard-wired within us.

In this interview, we further explore the relation of Nature + Nurture and how ideological agendas can distort the fearless investigation of the science. All of Barb’s books are available on Amazon. We’ll be reading them all and bringing her back on the show. (Huge thanks to David Sloan Wilson for recommending her.) In other news, Barb is starting a Learning How to Learn MOOC this Friday (aka tomorrow) on Coursera. Here are the links to the studies Barb mentioned in the show: McCord, Joan. And here’s the link to the study on the virtually non-existent replication of research in education: How the brain learns. In the first place, this site is useful to gather cues learned while attending the course. I also wanted to gather in one "collector" links to other sites that talk about memory, learning techniques and brain. Basically everything that can be useful for personal development, always starting from the most important part of our being: the brain.

Finally, I hope that this site will be useful to anyone willing to learn and constantly improve himself. This website is purposely written in two languages: Italian and English. In addition to being useful and interesting, I hope that this site can be a container of ideas, which anyone who wishes may contribute. In primo luogo, questo sito è utile per raccogliere spunti appresi durante la frequentazione del corso. Inoltre volevo raccogliere in un unico "raccoglitore" link ad altri siti che parlano di memoria, tecniche di apprendimento e cervello. On Sam Harris and Stephen Fry’s Meditation Debate February 19th, 2019 · 44 comments A few weeks ago, on his podcast, Sam Harris interviewed the actor and comedian Stephen Fry.

Early in the episode, the conversation took a long detour into the topic of mindfulness meditation. Harris, of course, is a longtime proponent of this practice. What sparked the diversion in the first place is when, early in the conversation, Fry expressed skepticism about meditation. Typically when we find ourselves in a chronic state of ill health it’s because we’ve moved away from something natural that our bodies have evolved to expect.Paleolithic man didn’t need gyms and diets because he naturally exercised and didn’t have access to an overabundance of bad food.Mindfulness mediation, by contrast, doesn’t seem to be replicating something natural that we’ve lost, but is instead itself a relatively contrived and complicated activity.

Harris’s response was to compare meditation to reading. Read more » Myth Confirmed. Paul Byham - MOOC transcript, reviews, and interests | Class Central. Inquiring Minds Podcast’s stream. For a long time gravity has told us that nothing can escape the gravitational grip of a black hole. And everything we had known about black holes until the mid-1970s was only related to gravity.
