A finales del siglo XIX el personaje de The Yellow Kid, creación de Mickey Dugan, estableció los bocadillos como modo de incorporar los textos a las caricaturas e historias en viñetas. Para muchos autores, esa es la piedra fundacional del mundo del cómic. Puede que esa sea una visión un tanto etnocentrista y de imperialismo cultural que olvida que libros medievales europeos u orientales ya habían desarrollado narraciones secuenciales en viñetas, algunas de ellas con soluciones muy similares a la de los bocadillos, pero es la que ha acabado imponiéndose de forma más o menos unánime. En todo caso, lo que nos interesa de todo eso es que el cómic tiene una amplia trayectoria como lenguaje artístico.

A lo largo de ella ha demostrado su versatilidad, creatividad y rasgos distintivos suficientes como para hacerlo autónomo de otras disciplinas relacionadas, como la pintura o la escritura.
