Nutritionist Know-How: Dining Out Healthfully - Cupcakes & Cashmere. As I wrote about in our kick-off post to this series, I cherish the experience of eating at restaurants with girlfriends, as well as G on our date nights. In the past, I've ordered with reckless abandon; but I'm perpetually interested in improving my menu game so I make smarter choices and don't end up unable to button my pants. For this month's column, I asked Shira to help breakdown restaurant menus - from specific foods to avoid at ethnic spots; to general strategies and philosophies to employ. Here's Shira! Navigating restaurant menus is an excellent topic to educate yourself on, and Emily and Alina sent me some great questions on the matter.

The general goal? To dine out healthfully, without sacrificing flavor and an enjoyable time. Back in the day, going out to restaurants was something of real novelty - to commemorate big occasions like anniversaries and graduations. Below are some of my tips, tricks, and strategies for making more healthful and deliberate menu choices.

This pumpkin seed and chickpea-packed trail mix is your new go-to for on-the-go snacking… Picture this: you’re on a hike surrounded by natural beauty, feeling strong and accomplished, and also in need of a serious power-snack if you plan on making it back to your car. No one wants to munch on cardboard, but does a deconstructed candy bar seem right in this vignette?

We’re obsessing over this protein-packed, nut-free trail mix recipe from holistic health counselor, Pamela Salzman. Packaged trail mix is often nothing more than peanuts and candy-coated chocolate. Chickpeas are a high-protein, high-fiber, but low-fat legume that can become super crunchy when you roast them in the oven. And I actually truly enjoy it- I feel more energized, more satisfied, and happier. I would never EVER have thought that a daily routine of at-home workouts would contribute to my happiness in a positive way, but I was wrong! When it comes to fitness goals, getting a firm, tight butt is the one we hear most often — by a wide, wide margin. It seems like no matter how many minutes we log on the Stairmaster or how many squats we do, that truly juicy booty always manages to elude us. Not surprisingly, some of us get a tad obsessive in our quest for a natural-looking, yet substantive, backside.

Lauren Caruso, our Contributor Network Editor, sums up the problem in typical succinct fashion: "I just want a really sick ass-to-hip ratio. And, let's face it — my hips aren't getting any smaller. " So, for the sake of Lauren's ratio — and all of yours — we brought in Taye Johnson, personal trainer and one of our favorite SoulCycle instructors. They'll rattle off the names of famous boxers who've trained there. They'll tell you that it's one of the gyms that's still sending some of the best fighters into competition today. Most gyms these days have been re-done on the inside to feel like spas. No air-conditioning, no showers, a carpeted floor, a giant boxing ring, and bags from the ceiling everywhere.

If you get cardiovascular exercise regularly (and we all should) – here’s how to fuel up. Cardio Basics Cardio exercise like walking, running and biking require energy from both carbohydrates and fat. Carbohydrates are the body’s #1 go-to source, but healthy sources of fat also give ample doses of energy.

As exercise intensity changes (like due to an increase in speed or running uphill, for example), the body switches back and forth between carbs and fat to provide energy. Since you can’t completely control how and when the body needs what nutrient, it’s best to have adequate amounts of both as a regular part of the diet. All foods are digested and metabolized differently, so you need to think about the best times to eat foods that will support your exercise schedule.
